The American poster looks like shit. Naturally, the Japanese one is better looking. Sorry about the small pic; this was the best one I could find.

Yeah I couldn't find a good one either, but the PCE cover art is identical.
I have the PCE game but it's really underwhelming. Not like there are that many decent fighters on the platformer, but even in that desert it doesn't exactly excel.

Absolutely love fighting games, so it's always nice to see a new article here about them, especially with stuff like this.
Personally I think the character graphics in this game are some of the worst in fighting games. They're silly.

I've got the PCE version; have to give them props for having a jiang shi character.

I actually prefer the PCE version over the Arcade. I found the latter to be a borderline unplayable mess, while the port is actually kind of ok if a bit boring. Something to add (which I already mentioned in my brief writeup in the Yie Ar Kung-Fu article, cause some claim Martial Champion was originally supposed to become Yie Ar Kung-Fu 2): While unarmed characters can pick up the opponents' weapons after they're dropped, at least in my experience they never actually use them in the Arcade version - on the PC Engine they do.

One thing I just added in, since I found it mentioned on the Japanese Wikipedia entry - the PCE version also introduces SNK-style desperation moves for when you're running low on health. How to execute them, though, I'm not sure, since they're not listed in the manual.

Is this a regional idiom I am unfamiliar with..?

Is this a regional idiom I am unfamiliar with..? Biting from? It means to copy/take from, mainly in a plagiaristic way.

Detailed artwork that actually looks like the in game graphics ? Get that filth out of here right now and go out and find the first two people you see outside, and put them in gaudy costumes in front of a shitty backdrop this instant ! And if the costume shops happens to be closed, find someone in the office to draw you a new poster, and make damn sure they can't draw." I seriously can't imagine why having artwork that actually LOOKS LIKE WHAT'S IN THE GAME was such an alien concept in the US in the late 80's and early 90's.

Arcade flyers were typically meant for arcade owners, to decide what games to purchase, not for the patrons...at least, that I ever saw. Konami of America must've used the same PR agency for a lot of their stuff because they all have real actors dressed in goofy costumes.

It was probably cheaper to buy the models a sandwich for their time rather than paying an artist for their work.
And while its not the first or only game to do it, its nice that the African, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern characters are all very white.

Well game boxart was pretty much just as dismall back then from what I've seen. Good lord, Final Zone II is a cover I'm pretty much 100 % confident I could actually draw better, and I suck at drawing. And well, not sure how having two assholes in cheap costumes in front of a shitty painting of nothing in particular is gonna help persuade someone to buy the game.

The local pizza parlor when I was in high school had this and Samurai Shodown II. While I played a lot more Samurai Shodown II, I did enjoy trying this one out a little from time to time. I even beat it as the French fighter once, and yeah, like the article suggests, Salamander seems to try and spam that upward striking move a lot when you fight him.
