Technically, the anniversary of the Japanese launch of the PS1 isn't until December 3rd, but apparently Sony says it's close enough, so...
(The American launch, by the way, happened in September. Me and the GC9X crew already celebrated it with a livestream. PLUG. PLUG.)
So, the Playstation. It's been 20 years since its release, and... needless to say, it's been a pretty big deal, ever since. Simply put, it did what earlier systems like the 3DO and Jaguar tried to do, only it was way better at it. It could do FMV, and it could do 3D. Said 3D wasn't always perfect, and to be honest, I think the N64 had the edge when it came to full 3D. Even so, though, it was a system that took fully textured polygons and made them move smoothly all the way back in 1994, so that was an achievement of its own.
Speaking of 1994, the thing lasted a really long time. Technically, the last game, some FIFA title, came out in 2004, although the last game of any real worth, C-12: Final Resistance came out two years before that. For a system that long, there's been an incredibly wide variety of games for it, and that's part of the reason I love the system so much. Pretty much any possible niche has you covered, no matter what you're looking for. I mean, I've gone into this before, but the fact that a system has stuff like Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, and stuff like, say, the X-Files FMV game... well, that just amazes me. Beyond that, you've got a ton of great arcade ports, plus tons of weird, unique games on their own.
I'll go ahead and say this: The PS1 is pretty much my favorite console of all time. It's difficult to say why for sure, and I admit, nostalgia might be a big part of it. I do think it's noteworthy, though, for being the first console to really use the concept of 3D, and from that, we got a lot of games that you probably wouldn't see too often on the Saturn, like Crash Bandicoot. I couldn't really fairly compare the PS1 to the Saturn, since I never had a Saturn of my own, though, so I'll let somebody else speak on that.
I know this is kind of a huge post to make, especially since the anniversary hasn't yet happened, but I feel the PS1 deserved. The thing shaped my childhood, and it pretty much shaped modern console gaming, for better or worse.
I'll wrap this up with one of the first "games" I ever owned for the PS1. I'd say that it's pretty much the best way to really define the console and what it did. (Technically, I also owned Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi, but nobody wants to see that. V:)
I'll wrap this up by saying that the PS2's also a damn good console, and another one of my personal favorites. It's also important, in its own way, before the last console we ever got before all the usual annoyances of modern gaming really started hitting us: An absolute need to have an internet connection, DLC for everything, and all that. They're both great systems with some great games, but I'd say my opinion edges just a little closer to the original gray box.
