The first Donkey Kong Country was released 20 years ago today. Nintendo acquired a good chunk of the British developer Rare Ltd., which breathed new life into the franchise, after it had been inactive for 10 years. This was the start of a great relationship with them for the next eight years, until 2002.
The original game had jaw-dropping graphics for its time, and really pushed the then-four-year-old Super Nintendo to the limits. Two more games followed in its path, and all three games even had their own Game Boy counterpart (compatible with the Super Game Boy).
As for my favorite Donkey Kong Country game? Believe it or not, but I would say the third one (the one with Dixie and Kiddy Kong). Rare and Nintendo knew that it would be the last on the Super Nintendo, so they really gave it their all with the third one, in terms of variety.

The graphics are very nice, and the music is very nice, but it really is terribly overrated otherwise. He says, "If you do not get this amazing new generation of donkey kong madness, you are stupid." Now you don't have to click.

How sure are we that it was today? Wikipedia claims it, but doesn't cite any sources. Gamefaqs says 25th for US.

Hard to believe that this game came out twenty years ago.
Time flies.

Hah, I forgot about navgtr. That guy is so ridiculous.
Anyways, Donkey Kong Country is so amazingly wonderful <3 Personally I think the entire trilogy is incredible, and one of the most awesome, consistent game series I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I love DKC. Diddy Kong is totally cool. (and Dixie too, but I'll save that for a discussion on the sequels) I remember dressing up as Diddy Kong for Halloween in 1st grade; my mom got me a custom-made red hat that said "Diddy", and a red shirt with gold stars sewn on the front and back. It was glorious. <3

Never really liked the series, never really understood the love. Could have sworn the original DKC came out in October? Either way, 1994 was a great year for games.

Fond memories of the holiday season of 1994. Saw the game in action on a French television program, and I was flabbergasted. Was also the most expensive game I got during that time; 179 Guilders! There's also some stuff written in the Console Wars book. I believe it was Hiroshi Yamauchi believing it was actually a 64-bit game, when he saw the game in action for the first time. It then became his (and Nintendo's) highest priority promoting the game at the CES.
Today the game doesn't impress me much anymore. The soundtrack remains a great thing to listen to I think. The sequel is better, more varied in my opinion.
Both Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze are superior games in my opinion. The latter being the my favorite 2D platform game since...well...Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

In terms of setting and atmosphere, I've always loved part 1. It seems a bit more innocent, and it does so in terms of gameplay mechanics too: It is sort of bare-bones in various aspects - the bosses all having palette-swaps being the most obvious example.
Part 2 has better gameplay, but it was the first instalment that floored me when I was it at Toys R Us.

I received Donkey Kong Country in 1994 for Christmas. I was blown away by the amount of animation all the sprites had, as well as their faux-three dimensional appearance. The soundtrack was excellent as well. Rare really pulled a rabbit out of the old SNES hat with it. I keep meaning to go back and play this game, as well as its two sequels which I have not played. I wonder how it holds up today.

I can appreciate the impact the series had on the Donkey Kong IP in general and its pretty incredible graphics, but I really don't care for how the series plays at all. I played through the first one, and a bit of 2, and I really don't plan on ever going back. It's hard for me to point to exactly what doesn't jive with me. The physics always felt kind of cheap and unpolished, I guess.

The physics always felt kind of cheap and unpolished, I guess. The gameplay was very European, as the tiles (where do the platforms end?) were kind of unclearly defined at times. It was nowhere near as precise as Japanese J&Rs, but it was still very playable (unlike, say, a ton of Amiga J&Rs)
