3. Xenonauts. This X-Com inspired game is in fact the best X-Com game. It fixes many of the tedious issues of the original game, and expands on the gameplay. Base building and air superiority are given more importance, and the numerous new items and features allow for fun new strategies in the tactical combat mode. Most importantly, Xenonauts achieves this without dumbing down and/or excessively simplifying core mechanics... something Firaxis' Xcom failed at miserably. Holy shit, I completely forgot about Xenonauts! While I don't know if I'd call it the best X-COM game (OpenXCOM does fix a lot of the issues the original game had), Xenonauts is very high-quality. I should get back into it; hopefully I can beat it before the year ends. I guess so far, I'd place it in 4th place in my list.

I have barely purchased any new games this year. Probably the limited funds.
And as usual, when I barely buy any new stuff, it usally ends up being the essential 1st party Nintendo games.
So, as of late november, it's:
5 - NES Remix 2. Yes I'm 100% serious. Just had a lot of fun with this, and I was even sad when I completed everything there was to do.
4 - Shovel Knight. Brilliant little game. Especially in the level design department.
3 - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Just platforming perfection. And platformers never get old.
2 - Mario Kart 8. The first Mario Kart that can rival Double Dash, and the first game I truly enjoyed playing online.
1 - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS. The Wii U version isn't out yet in Europe, but I'm already certain it will take the top spot. Shared with the 3DS version because I see them as a pair.
Honorable mention for Tomodachi Life, but that's more like software than a game.
So yeah, it's Nintendo city; But then again, I don't own a PS4/XBone and my Laptop can barely run games from last decade.

Each year I'm sure that I never played a that-years release, but this time it is nearly true. Even my 3DS purchases like Pokemon X, Bravely Default, Soul Hackers etc. are all remainders from last year's releases.
But turns out I played 3 game of this year, if you go by completion instead of starting date on the Telltale seasons. Those being The Wolf Among Us, Child of Light and Walking Dead S2. I liked them all, but that would also be the order of how much to how lesser. I'm currently playing SMT4, and will probably finish it by the end of the year, so by default that would go somewhere on the top 5 list, there only being 4 games to pick from and all.

I do really like Matt Lees Everything Dark Souls 2 gets wrong video, because it summarizes pretty well that it's still a decent game, but why it is a letdown in a lot of ways. Or I just like it because he's cute and british, also a possibilty.

1. Freedom Planet - Shovel Knight was pretty great, but I'd say that this is the real retro platformer of the year. I appreciate that that it's a game that actually goes into 16-bit territory, which is definitely not something you see indie devs get into often. Besides that, it's generally a really well-polished platformer that, while it does take some inspiration from Sonic, adds in so much that it's still very much it's own thing. The level design's fantastic, it's got combat in a 2D platformer that doesn't suck, and some really good boss fights, too. I've been so hyped for this thing I'd definitely call it my Game Of The Year. 2. Lethal League = Probably one of the best competitive multiplayer game that isn't a fighting game I've played this year, if not in a long, long while. The best thing I could compare it to is Windjammers, only it's even more intense, and generally a lot easier to figure out. The netcode is usually pretty great, aside from a few times when it apparently stops workign entirely, so it's been a really great multiplayer game for me. It's also given me one of my favorite characters of this year, Latch. Hopefully, there'll be a lot more DLC on the way. 3. One Finger Death Punch - This might have come out last year on XBLIG, but it got released this year on Steam, so close enough. This is probably the most addicting games I've played this year, and again, if not a very, very long time. The concept's incredibly simple, since you basically just click left or right to click dudes. When you deal with so many different types of enemies, and weapons, and all that, though, it gets really, really hectic. It almost feels like a cut-down version of the Arkham combat engine, since it's all about taking out a crowd of enemies as quickly as you can. Also, it has a survival mode where you have to constantly push away a needy cat off your screen. I like that. 4. Abyss Oddysey - Out of all the 'roguelites' that have been popping up everywhere, I think this is one of my favorites. Made by the guys who did Zeno Clash, this is basically like a cross between a roguelike, Metroid, and Super Smash Brothers. Yes, really. The controls are basically very similar, and there's a cool gimmick where you can capture monsters and use them as extra playable characters. It's incredibly tough for me, since I'm pretty bad at these games, but it's a great concept that's constantly getting updates. 5. The Legend of Korra - You might be wondering why I didn't pick Bayonetta 2. I probably if I actually had a WiiU, but I don't, so. I'll be honest and say while this is far from being Platinum's best work, it's still one of the best licensed games I've played in quite a while, and definitely the best one I've played based on a Nickelodeon cartoon. It's clear this was made by Platinum's B-team, sure, but there's still enough of their soul and depth in there that it's still a pretty decent character action game. You've still got dodge offsets, taunts, equippable items to make things easier or tougher for you, and all that. It's pretty short, about 2-3 hours so, but for $15, you could do far, far worse. HONORABLE MENTION: MURI - Yeah, it's another platformer. I know what I like. What I like about this one is that it's a DOS-style platformer based off of such classic games like the original Duke Nukem, meaning that think the author is literally trying to seduce me out of my money. (It totally worked.) It's a wonderfully authentic tribute to one of my favorite eras of gaming, and it's a pretty fun game, too. I guess while as a game, it's nothing spectacular, there's just something I appreciate so much about that somebody would make a game like this that I pretty much HAVE to give it a spot. Yeah, MURI's been on my wishlist for a while (though technically Dec 2013). However, I've committed myself to playing the ACTUAL EGA DOS games in my backlog before picking it up. Finished Duke Nukem and the Commander Keen series. Just have Dangerous Dave left Aw, crud, you're right! It came out so late I must have assumed it was this year. Bah, I'll think of something else later. Maybe Ziuggrat, I dunno.

Too many big releases yet for me to play before I can make a list! Persona Q, Dragon Age, and I still have to digest Smash Bros.
Can confidently say both Danganronpa 1+2 will be in my top 5 though. Can't believe they both came out in English this year. Was thinking the first one was earlier than that.

In don't really have an specific order for my top 5 of 2014:
- Shadowrun Dragonfall
- Dark Souls II
- The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
- Deception IV
and uh... I dunno, what are the rules of this? How do you account for Early Access?

Do they have to be games released in 2014 or just ones that I've played this year? I'm having a hard time racking my brain trying to think of new releases I played. It's pretty much just Dark Souls 2, Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet, which are all pretty great (even though I ended up liking DS2 a whole lot less than I was hoping I would.) I think the overall best game that I played this year was Wind Waker HD. Xenoblade and Pandora's Tower are also pretty good, although XBC wore on me pretty bad by the time I gave up on it (which was close to the end, but I know I experienced the best part of that game, so whatever.) I also played Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut, which I can't say was a "good" game in the strictly technical sense given that it crashed every half hour or so, but I love that game with all my big dumb heart. Actually, nearly everything I played this year was a re-release of an old game - Tales of Symphonia, Devil May Cry 3 on PS3, Bayonetta 1 on Wii U.
Oh fuck I forgot Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta 2 wins best game.
I just didn't play that much this year I guess??

So I wasn't the only person to play MURI! It was a nice surprise. Yeah, like Zerker, I've been busy playing real DOS games, that I've not even thought about playing spiritual ones. Oh and Xenonauts is really cool. It's a strange leap coming from the new X-COM games, however.

I've seen several posts here mention Freedom Planet. Do you guys think I would like it if I don't generally like Sonic?
