By that, I mean, what game do you love to pull out when you're bored and want to just generally waste time with when a "bigger" game just takes too much effort? Handheld, PC, console, whatever. Could be something like Tetris, could be something else entirely.
For me... hmm. It could either be One Finger Death Punch, which I've already gone into on the "Best Games of 2014" thread, or, depending on my mood, Klax. They're both pretty simple games, sure, but that means that it's not as much of a commitment to open them up and play them for ten or so minutes when I'm bored and lazy. Cook, Serve, Delicious is pretty good for that, too, since it's not quite as difficult. You just have to appreciate the sorts of games you can just pull up, play for a bit, and put back down whenever, y'know?

Really depends, usually the title goes to Sonic 1. But, sometimes it's Tetris or Bejeweled.

If I want to seriously just blow a few hours for no reason, Doom. There are so many different megawads and gameplay patches that there are combinations that I still have not tried.

Super Mario Bros. If I'm waiting for some friends to arrive I'll plug in the NES and kill some time.

LYNE. Indie game I played this year that has daily new puzzles, can be really addictive on hard puzzles, but it's easy to quit at anytime. I play it when I don't want to do something heavy. Before that, I'd throw in SNK Vs. Capcom Card Battle DS for some brain dead fun. It is not a very complex or well balanced card game. I usually try playing with an all female deck as a restriction for the hell of it.

Depends on my mood, but Castlvania(NES games or SotN), any Mega Man, or good ol Tetris.

XCOM, Contra, Doom, Umihara Kawase, Mario (mostly one of the games I've already played a ton, like Super Mario Bros. 3 or 64)... lately I've been spending a lot of time blowing up AI bots in Atomic Bomberman. It's really amazingly fun when I don't feel like doing anything else

I usually try playing with an all female deck as a restriction for the hell of it. I'm glad to see someone else enjoyed this. It's not nearly as good as the NGPC games, but it's a fun distraction and I enjoyed a lot of the card artwork. As for my go to time wasting games, The Ninja Warriors for the SNES would definitely qualify. I would say Contra as well, but I don't have my NES at my apartment so I turn to the SNES for this most of the time. I will also say Real Bout 2, and just about any fighting game now that I think about it.

I've played through it at least four times by now.

Mario Golf and Dr. Mario have become two favorites for this sort of thing lately. Dr. Mario's easy to jump into at any point, so I can pretty much just pause it and let it sleep at any time. Mario Golf has a lot of the same qualities, but is a slightly "deeper" experience, if you want to call it that. There's a lot more intricacies involved.

Really don't have a "time-wasting game." But certain open world games like Red Dead Redemption, Gun and Retro City Rampage let's you going around doing evil things like killing people for no reason. I've found (the few times I've played them,) doing this I find myself wasting time for hours on end. (Man, do I feel bad right now telling you all this with some guilt. But I'm pretty sure some of us have done this in similar games.)

Pretty much any NES, SNES, CPS1/2, Neo Geo, Mame ROMs of non-RPGs, but the ones I very frequently load up would be Mega Man, Punch Out, Super Punch Out, Super Street Fighter 2

Nowadays I play a lot Adult Swim's Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe on Steam, nice little hybrid of block-matching and platforming.

Castle of Illusion, Super CastleVania IV and Bloodlines are great go-to classics for me when I'm in a platform game mood. Other than that, ACIV: Black Flag and Saint's Row IV are great because there is so much to do, you can turn them on for a few hours and feel like you've done something.
Mario Kart 8, Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast, SEGA Rally Championship and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed are my top choices when I need to scratch that arcade racing itch that pops up.
