What powerful different cultural forces are found in Red Steel for the Wii that Famitsu gives it a 8,9,9,8 and sites like Gamespot and IGN give it 5 and 6's?
Is it Killer 7 all over again?

*scratches* That's really odd. I have a feeling that it has to do with the graphics.
Look, I'm the type of gamer that screams "Gameplay is more important than graphics!!!" but the graphics...no es bueno for Red Steel.
That said, I was amazed at how nicely it controlled with the nunchuck, and I can't wait to see more FPS's on the Wii.

Famitsu is the IGN of japan when it comes to reviwes, so I would take their scores with a grain of salt, but I think that Red Steel is at least worth a look or a rental.

Maybe it's because FPS games aren't so popular in Japan, so that the new control scheme isn't as jarring as it is for the Western reviewers who have played hundreds of FPS games that use the dual analog "Halo" setup.

Well, the main complaint is not the control scheme, but how buggy it is. But I'll give it the benifit of the doubt untill I actualy play it.

I'm going to take two guesses.
One, is that since the Japanese really aren't big into first person shooters, they can't pick a good one from a bad one. This reasoning is probably far too oversimplified.
The other is more likely that they felt that the control scheme overcome the weaknesses that the rest of the game has. Elsewhere in the world, we get a lot more first person shooters, and a lot of the harsher reviews are judging it against similar games, whereas that is not necessarily the case with Japan.

You know what would be great? If Square made another Bushido Blade but for the Wii.

I think it's payment for good reviews VS Actual Good game syndrome.

I definitely think it's a "culture of FPS" issue. We in the west love FPS games and have become so accustomed to controlling them with mouse and keyboard (or two analog sticks) that anything else seems inadequate. It's similar to how some RPG fans will trash a game if it doesn't stick exactly to the conventions set by Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy.
So while in the west Red Steel is just a generic shooter with a bizarre control scheme, in Japan it must seem somewhat unique since FPS games aren't so popular there.

Close, it's not that we love FPS, it's that we love Counterstrike, Quake, and Unreal Tournament. Any first person game that isn't those will be reviewed more harshly in the west. A generalization, but in Japan they're more accepting of slower paced and/or uniquely controlling first person games. Even first person RPGs like Ultima Underworld/etc. got console ports in Japan that never existed here because of this. You could release an Echo Night, Wizardry or Deus Ex game there and expect it to actually sell more than three copies.
Some of my favorite games ever are played from the first person perspective but I think "FPS" is pretty much the dumbest "genre" that's ever existed due to the expectations it brings to the table in gamers' and reviewer's minds.

...Bizzare control scheme? I thought it controlled quite well.

Bizzare is ever relative, FPS is often a stagtent (though I really like FPS games) genre, the moment you try something different or weird you get chased out.

Kinda reminds me of how UT was recieved here, mostly because there's no one-hit kills, and the weapons were good attempts at something different than that usual handgun-SMG-Racketlawnchair setup.

I think it has more to do with the prior mentioned "FPS culture" in the west. Or more specifically; the knowledge that comes with it.
Our reviewers tend to compare FPS games with the standard palate of Goldeneye Quake Unreal Halo Berg de Blerg de Half-Life Mod v4.7 (don't get me wrong, Counterstrike is grand, but by no means the model for an entire genre)
so when something new comes along that doesn't quite match these standards, it's typically givin a wag of the finger before a closing with the standard "Mouse & Keyboard is teh B3tTR!!!1!" schpeel and a 6.9 rating.
