Just put together that Gashi Gashi is the dude who did these Breaking Bad scribbles, can't hate on him for that: That doesn't make him any less creepy, hth

Hey I finally got around to listening to the podcast about Freedom Planet.
Can't really disagree with anything. I will say that I like the story precisely because it reminds me of bad sonic fanfic. It makes me giggle.

Reminds me of the Sonic SatAM cartoon, which was one of my favorites as a teenager. Which I *suppose* falls in the "bad Sonic fanfic" sphere, but... I mean... I legitimately enjoyed the story and characters in SatAM a lot. They resonated with me emotionally, more so than any other American cartoon of the era. It was like a soap opera to my young self, and I really like that Freedom Planet captured so much of that same vibe.

Yea I think that's kind of what they were going for. The SatAM cartoon and the comics both had that weird tone jump between "cute animals" and "Literally hitler" from scene to scene. Freedom Planet just dialed it up to 11.
TBH while I haven't really researched the dev team, I get the feeling that at least one person involved in the script writing isone of those weird sonicfans with an OC edgehog and bad art and all that. But you know, I still enjoyed it.

Well, it did begin life as a Sonic fan game, and the main three characters are all OCs being used with permission from their artist, so... there you go. -Tom

Yup. That explains a lot. Does make it more impressive that the actual gameplay ended up being so *damned* good though.

I think it's the melee combat that brings it up a level in my eyes over the usual Sonic formula. Freedom Planet was an absolute blast.

For me, it's the level designs. They're absolutely brilliant, and manage to stay fresh throughout the game, with each stage introducing new gimmicks, new set pieces, and new ways of hiding bonus items. ...Also, Milla. Milla's gameplay is simply brilliant. Lilac and Carol are comparable to Sonic and Mega Man X, but Milla is very much her own thing -- she plays unlike any other character I've ever seen in a game like that. And she is just SUPER fun to play as, and pretty challenging as well. Looking forward to Freedom Planet 2, where she seems like she's going to be even more of a badass: Gotta love that kung-fu pose! -Tom

Yeah, I'm stoked for Freedom Planet 2. You're right about those level designs, they're solid. I really enjoyed poking around in them.
Milla had a bit of a learning curve, almost a SMB2-style of play in some ways that was really weird but interesting in a game like this.

I still haven't played through as Mila. I actually did my first playthrough as Carol. That may have affected my views on the story, too. Carol's version seems to be paced a *little* better, and a little less jumpy and disjointed.

Now that this is bumped, I should note that there's gonna be a demo for Freedom Planet 2 at the end of the month. I'll make a thread for it in General around then, but I figured you all should know.
Glad people are starting to get into this game even now, so I'll drop a hot take: I think this game was better than Shovel Knight.

Glad people are starting to get into this game even now, so I'll drop a hot take: I think this game was better than Shovel Knight. I agree. Both games are exceptional, and Shovel Knight may even be the more technically polished of the two (certain aspects of Freedom Planet didn't quite work as intended, like the lives system where extra lives were literally pointless), but Freedom Planet is just way more FUN in my opinion. Both games are absolute must-plays, though, either way. -Tom

Gee, that's really tough. I'd definitely put them side by side. Hard to say which is really better, though. Shovel Knight knew what it wanted to be, and absolutely nailed it. No room for improvement. Freedom Planet was I think way more ambitious, but just not quite as cohesive. Less polished, as wyrdwad put it.
