Im actually going to be cancelling work on III as I just got IV in the mail. IV is pretty much an upgrade to III and plays a lot smoother and looks better while it still has the story-line of III and extras with it. I'll post updates as they happen.

I think I used to post here a amccour, but just wanted to point out that the Passage of the Book translation is basically done. Currently going through and trying to identify any lines that got missed/typos/weird sentences, but unless something is really broken later in the game, it SHOULD be totally in English now (except for the character icon select screen, because I can't find where that's coming from).
Current patches are on the Steam forum.

Is the patch Steam-only i.e. not compatible with standard CD versions?

Just submitted the complete-but-not-super-well-tested version to RHDN. I'm going to start looking into The Third Book... sometime this fall. I need a break. TTB looks really cool though, and appears to bring back LD1/2's skill system, although the town graphics are sort of gross. The Third Book has a lot of its text stored in dat files encoded via Huffman Coding and I have no idea what that is but I found some tool on a Korean-language forum for at least decoding them. Some comments on the game itself: - I like the rather hefty travel costs. You don't have food per se, but wandering around aimlessly will kill you. - I also like that NPCs are persistent entities that will do quests on their own if left to their own devices, which really lends an air of dynamism that a lot of games like this (see: Daggerfall) lack. - If you need to deliver a weapon/armor, the quest target won't take it if it's equipped. So you're free to - It's fast. It's like if Ys was a largely text-driven turn-based open-world dungeoncrawler. ... That made more sense before I said it. starscream : I don't think it works with the CD version. I'm under the impression that the download version is... updated in some capacity for modern PCs. Not having the CD version myself, though, I can't test it. That being the case, if I did get a copy of the CD version, re-inserting the script should be doable.

I'm going to try to put up another version of the PotB patch on the Steam forums tonight lol nevermind, I broke something, and submit another update to RHDN on Saturday.
A few other comments:
1. I'm sort of hesitant to put out a patch for the CD based version on the grounds that most of the pirated versions floating around online are that. Out of respect to Artdink and Degica, and out of interest of not getting a C&D, I'd rather funnel people towards just getting the Steam version :S
2. Aaand at that. Any thoughts on whether Degica should be made aware of fan translation efforts, or should I try to keep this on the down-low?
3. Did Book of Eternity ever actually come out?
4. By the way, since this is more or less done and just pending more testing/proof-reading, does anyone know what the following names are supposed to be?
セムイ アークメイヤー バイドゥラーク
They seem connected with アンゴルモア and ヴァッサゴ, which I'm calling Angolmois and Vassago (from Nostradamus's prophecies and the... Ars Goetica? respectively). Been calling the last three Semui, Arkmeyer, and Baidulark since I can't find any proper mythological equivalents for either :S

I don't know if there is any evidence regarding Degica's attitude to this. Generally, I would say it depends on what you think you could get from it. It's perfectly possible they're already aware of it, but will not acknowledge it in a friendly way once contacted. On the other hand, there have been some unofficial PC game translations which eventually morphed into official ones. FWIW all the examples I know are adult games though.

Editing this to note that there's a new version of the patch out. Should be on the Steam forums now, and up on RHDN whenever the process it.
Anyway.
I don't really see myself getting anything from contacting them, and I'm definitely NOT angling after getting it made official or anything.
It's more a question of how safely I can advertise this on various forums -- I think one of the reviews on the Steam store page mentions the patch, after all.
Oh, another thing. In lieu of translating the manual, I sort of want to put together a Quick Start guide. The game is... fairly straightforward from a UI standpoint, but there are some quirks worth knowing about, like how to get your party to run, that gold is divided up, that your companions take care of their own provisions, that you die if you run out of money while traveling, etc.
On the other hand, I don't want to go overboard with that, since I think some of this you're supposed to figure out on your own :S
By the way, I don't remember if this came up earlier in the thread and I don't plan on getting the Legend Pack before the next sale, but do the NPCs in LD1 and 2 go adventuring on their own..?
-- edit --
So for the sake of digital archeology...
I briefly played Lunatic Dawn Odyssey. A few observations:
- On the surface it plays very similarly to the Books games. - Art assets are predominately either photographs or recycled from Lunatic Dawn 3. - The battle system is this (rather slow) ATB-based thing. Unclear if you can directly control your party members. - You travel between towns via routes on a map. Unlike the Book games, there's no compulsory travel cost. You can walk, which is free, but slower, or you take a horse, which costs money and is faster. Also I think sea-based routes are still in this, so I'm assuming they're the fast options but also the most expensive. - You also don't seem to need lightsources in dungeons, so provisions as a whole are out. - Only enemies I noticed when traveling were bands of thieves that'd either request your money or your items. - You can change your title by talking to NPCs at the inn, I think. They ask what to call you, give you four options, and you get to pick one. - I didn't see any birthdays or heritage info on the stats screens, so I'm assuming stuff like marriage and children are out. - The world seems... very static. Item prices appear to be fixed. Towns don't seem to have alignments (unless this is hidden). Stuff like that. NPCs do move around on their own but it doesn't look like they ever take up quests? - It has missions where you go directly to somebody's house instead of delivering an item to a shop or whatever, although the houses seem to be non-persistent things that only exist within the scope of a given quest. - You buy pieces of a map instead of buying permits into various cities. - Also there's a "collection book" sort of thing that... looks like the ones from Neo Atlas, kind of?

I saw someone on another forum asking about Lunatic Dawn, which led me back to this topic. Since the images had broken with the site move, I went and uploaded everything to the new server, so everything should look normal again. Hopefully this will be of use to someone!
