Is that supposed to be anything like...
Also, the voice of Chuckie on Rugrats (and basically everyone else in cartoons) died today.

Also, the voice of Chuckie on Rugrats (and basically everyone else in cartoons) died today. That was shocking. My brother and me were just talking about how creepy it was when hey had her voice overdubbed for the kid in Lorenzo's Oil.

RIP Meowth/Arngrim/Lezard/Lawfer. I think the key take away here is that you're the tri-Ace Super Fan, and thus, somewhat biased when it comes to their games. I'm definitely biased, haha, but it's objective fact that Valkyrie Profile was designed with replay value in mind and has a significant amount of new content available the second time through to make it worthwhile. I mean, there are other tri-Ace games, like Star Ocean 4, that I like a lot but wouldn't particularly urge replaying. All that game has to offer in a replay is the chance to get more battle trophies (but shooting for a complete battle trophies collection in that game is almost kind of stupid, to be honest, because it takes an INSANE amount of time and tedious work and there's not much to be gained from it) and the opportunity to choose to keep a party member who is normally replaced late-game with a different member. So yeah, a replay of SO4 would be like 95% the same experience, but Valkyrie Profile changes a lot.

Can I suggest that if Monster World IV wins, we tack on Wonder Boy in Monster World as well? Neither game is very long, and since GC9X already covered the other Monster World games, it would neatly wrap up the series as whole.

We could probably tack on the first Shantae too given the similarities between the two games.

Well, it would certainly give me an excuse to power through the end of Monster World 4. I ragequit on the second last Dungeon a couple years ago.
... that dungeon is long, and somewhat frustrating to have to do all over upon failing at the boss.

I'm a... whatever the western equivalent of a weeaboo would be, I guess. Voting for Wing Commander, though I might play one of the ports just to be different.

That's why I said "Plus". I'm not saying to replay the game solely to get a different ending; I'm saying no matter what difficulty you play on or what ending you go for, you're gonna miss out on a ton of content (namely dungeons). The fact that you have to pick between two different endings with different final dungeons and bosses is just an addendum to that. Hard is the best difficulty to choose to see the most of the game, as you can recruit every character and explore the bonus dungeon in full after completing the game (assuming you get all the items you need from the Hard-exclusive dungeons), but you still miss out on several very cool dungeons that only appear on Easy and Normal. Personally, though, I recommend a first-time player start with Normal and get the B ending and later replay on Hard and go for A. I think it's better to see the "expected" ending first, and doing Normal first means some characters will still be new to you on Hard (and then you can construct a party of Hard-exclusive characters if you so desire to differentiate that experience from playing on Normal). I'm sorry to derail the thread for a quick second, but does the Seraphic Gate have everything if I hard mode the B ending? Because I've already done the A ending on PSP, but having lost that file ages ago and getting a PS1 copy, I've been wanting to do the Seraphic Gate stuff, because I just love the battles in this game, and don't feel like doing all the A ending stuff. Well, that and I want to see the B ending, but I don't want to waste a ton of time going for an ending that isn't going to get me the Seraphic Gate.

Which ending you get doesn't make a difference in terms of the Seraphic Gate, so you're good in that regard. The reason you have to play on Hard to access the entirety of the Seraphic Gate is because the Hard-exclusive dungeons in the main game contain Flame Jewels, and you need to collect all 8 if you want access to every room in the Seraphic Gate. Those rooms contain the rarest treasure and three secret recruitable characters.
To get back on topic, I'm really excited that Monster World IV won! For a while there, it was looking like Wing Commander was gonna claim victory. I'll try to fire up my Wii soon and finally start up the English version (thus far I've only ever played the game via the Japanese Monster World collection on PS2). I can give a couple pieces of general advice:
- The game isn't open-ended like other Monster World games, so you lose access to dungeons once you complete them and thus access to what they contain. Explore thoroughly before you finish them off. You can, however, use the genie to warp back to town and return to a dungeon as much as you want until you clear it. The town also updates after each cleared dungeon, so check around before you head off to the next dungeon. - If you want to "cheat", there's a chest at the beginning of the game that's programmed wrong (I believe this was fixed in some versions, so your mileage may vary), so that you can keep getting more and more of its contents (life drops; think pieces of heart). It's easy to find yourself unable to get a full life bar at the end of the game (because you've missed life drops somewhere and can't go back), so if you want to inflate your life bar early on (and the version you're playing allows it), there ya go.

The cheat treasure chest SHOULD be functional so long as you aren't playing the early fan translated versions, which screwed it up.

The Ice Pyramid's overly long for it's part in the game. It makes it very annoying to replay for that extended double fetch quest puzzle segment.

Speaking of the Ice Pyramid, the second part of that area is a bit mazelike. The game gives you a map of each side, but it doesn't track all the interconnections between the front and back, so it's a bit hard to navigate. When I played through last, I took down the map and marked it up accordingly. here it is for anyone interested. I also wrote down some in-game note. Dunno if it's helpful or not; I forget what it referred to.

I think the key take away here is that you're the tri-Ace Super Fan, and thus, somewhat biased when it comes to their games. I'm not a Tri-Ace super fan but I'll say this: Valkyrie Profile is the only Tri-Ace game worth playing (along with the sequel). I never liked their games but I loved VP for some reason to the point of beating it more than 6 times. OK, so Monster World IV won. I'll probably join the party if work doesn't go too crazy this month.
