SSSV is easily one of my favorite games of all time. It has a depth of variety and creativity which very, very few other games have ever produced. Every level is unique and original. The music is amazing. The sense of humor is omnipresent in every facet of things, and I believe was my first real exposure to British-style humor. Rarely did games where the devs put this kind of effort into the style and detail come along.
I need to thank the article author for hunting down the magazine scans, especially the ones from Official Nintendo Magazine. As much as they managed to get into the final product, there are a great, great many things that were planned for SSSV that didn't make it in. Larger worlds, more animals, and a mechanic where animals would actually evolve over time and acquire new and more outlandish abilities, as hinted in Nintendo Power. The preview I saw way back in the day was in issue 100 of NP, which had a single design document but not nearly the amount of beta material and screenshots that Official Nintendo seems to have stuck in. Seeing the Hippo graph and the extra screenshots is a treat.

Just a quick correction. From the article, under Evo's Space Adventures: "The title screen sounds like a bad techno remix of ABBA's Tragedy..." ABBA didn't do Tragedy... it was the Bee Gees. Was covered by Steps in 1998. I love many things, but cheesy pop from the 70's, 80's and 90's are my JAM

Astonishing to hear that the GBC game is so good. You'd never guess from the screenshots.

Saved for later!
I don't have too many fond memories of the N64 (overall, while it had a few impressive games I thought it simply failed to improve upon the SNES like I thought it would), but I certainly remember fooling around on SSSV (great name BTW) at my cousin's house. I didn't even play it for real. I just ran around on the bridge area chasing mice?! LOL. I'm sure if I played it legit, I would enjoy it even more. I just remember the open space being damn impressive and that the N64 got this one right, for a change.
BTW, early to mid '98 was the last time EGM was still good. I even dare say it was underrated at that point. Loved seeing that old review format picture in the SSSV piece. The magazine sadly fell off the rails going into 1999, though, IMHO.

Astonishing to hear that the GBC game is so good. You'd never guess from the screenshots. The first level, of capturing the sheep, is straight up awful, and there's some odd bits of difficult or arbitrary design later on, but overall the later levels were really good fun.

This was a great game. It would be a real pleasant surprise to see them revisit this concept one day, but that won't happen as long as GTA prints money.
