I want to preface this by saying two things - first of all, thank you to everyone that's posted with some feedback. We don't get much if any, and every bit is as precious as gold. So thank you!
Secondly, please be advised that themeltdown views expressed below are solely my take on things and do not reflect the views or opinions of the rest of the GC9x crew.
Which bugs me. We've got so many people across this forum who don't get involved in this, and that's fine, their choice, but it'd help if we knew why, so we could try an fix that.Market it, dammit! Put some sample of each new episode in the general thread forum, take time to explain what it is and who the participants are, and do that also in the general thread. Show the people how much humor there is in the casts, that it is made by funny and clever people, and is not a technical audio blog for engineers. You really must promote it more. It took me 6 years to try it, and that's awful, because it's likeable and easy to listen to. Post some best of of each episodes, with the best jokes and the best anecdotes in it. Try a better name, short and with a pun, you know, the works for a podcast. Reboot it, Dammit.
Hell, if you want it, I can DL Wavelab and make a best of of the Monster World IV episode. It's easy to do! Dammit!Yeah if you want to put together a "digest" or best of reel from it I'm cool with it. It would be good to get some "bite sized" episodes or something.
We're definitely in need of better promotion. I've been trying on Twitter to spread the word but to be honest I haven't been pushing hard enough (I don't want to annoy followers, or even people that don't listen to the show by spamming). Anyway I really have no fucking clue what to do.
Granted it's still a pain to set them up, but I've found those emulators are easier than dealing with Dosbox.
I think maybe there needs to be a HG101 "Japanese 101" class first, lol.I'm toying with the idea as something for my site. I'm sure there's other "Japanese for Weebs" stuff out there but it wouldn't hurt to have one more.
Keep in mind, I love the idea of GC9X, and hope to see you guys become much bigger and more successful. I just can't see myself actually taking part in it.It's kind of an at your leisure sort of thing - don't worry about finishing the game, the main thing is to try a new game out and at least let people know here what you think of it. We've had some really good participation in the past, but lately it feels kind of disheartening because nobody seems to be playing the games; that's part of the reason I really don't post much on the threads myself. I guess it's a self-perpetuating downward spiral of negativity.
Definitely let us know if there's a game you really like and would like to participate on, our best episodes have come from talking to the guest hosts that are true-blue fans of the games we play.
As for finding time I think that's part of my current jaded feelings and burn-out; I have very little free time outside of work and home responsibilities, and when we get a game that's a pile of shit like Marc Ecko's Getting it Up, it fucking sucks because either A) I play it and it eats into my ability to play games that aren't shit, making me more bitter, or B) I barely play it and as a result I contribute less or not at all to the episode. I mean we've had a few gems like last month's where it doesn't feel like a chore, but I'd say that accounts for maybe like 1 out of 6 podcasts.
Back on Marc Ecko, it's not even fun drek, it's not something that's particularly fun to mock - it's a cynical, loveless, formulated attempt to seem authentic and it's an absolute chore to play. I'm fucking livid that I wasted $15 on it, much less a buggy, broken half-assed port.
This is how I feel; even if you're not playing the game of the month it's awesome to hear from you guys - questions, comments, requests, anything. Just hearing from you guys here means the world to me. Even though we work our asses off and don't get shit, it's still worthwhile as long as I/we get to interact with you guys here (and/or when you guest host), and chatting with the few loyal folks following us on twitter. That is literally one of the two things that keeps me going on this and/or hanging around this hellhole.
A FAQ really could help attract more people.Weasel summed it up pretty well - basically if you've got the game of the month (or access to it through uh, "gray area" means) feel free to play through it and offer tips here to help the others along. If you like or feel strongly enough about one of the games, feel free to volunteer as a guest host - y'all end up stealing the show most of the time.
An FAQ is a good idea, though - some of the feedback from this thread would come in handy.
Secondly, please be advised that the
Twitter's aware of this, right? The problem with this subforum is that it only attracts the people who post about and follow GC9X regularly, anyway...

Someone made a comment on Twitter and I wanted to comment - I'm all for trying more Japanese PC games. I know a lot of folks don't want to use emulation of stuff they don't own but would you be willing to play along via emulation if it's on those?

I think the main thing holding me back from taking part in GC9X is the capricious manner with which I play games. I'll get really, really into one or two games for a while, play the hell out of them, then lose all interest in them and move on to something else. The idea of choosing one game, which I might not even be interested in, and committing to it for an entire month gives me the feeling of wearing a pair of pants that's two sizes too small.Keep in mind, I love the idea of GC9X, and hope to see you guys become much bigger and more successful. I have the same stance as Jason on this. I would love to take part in it (and I did play through TekWar, of all games, when it was being played last year), but it's hard finding time to devote to another game amidst all of the other ones I need to get around to playing. GC9X is really great, I've learned a lot about games I never would've tried from the podcast, and I'd love to one day be involved and maybe even contribute to the podcast itself, but it's just a matter of finding time to commit to one game.

I can't speak for anyone else, and maybe I shouldn't talk period considering my participation is so sporadic, but I wouldn't say you have to commit yourself to a single game for an entire month. A lot of the games that have been selected for GC9X are stuff that I could comfortably beat over a weekend. I'm sure people would be happy to have your participation even if you can't get around to playing a game until the end of the month, or, better yet, if you get it out of the way at the beginning of the month, you can periodically pop into the topic and join the discussion throughout the month. Either way, minus the rare month when the game selected is notably long, you'll certainly have time for playing other games of your own choosing.
I've been posting on the forums for quite some time, and reading the site itself for much longer, but I still don't know how GC9X exactly works. Who participates? By what means (online?)? Are the gameplay segments "live", or pre-recorded? How do people prepare for the episodes? What is the idea of the show? I've watched a couple of episodes, but still, that only covers the final question.
A FAQ really could help attract more people.
