Ex-patriate sequels, it's a thing that's always interested me.

Lemme drop some suggestions, while I'm thinking about it:
- Mario VS Donkey Kong - If we go with Nintendo titles, there's also Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country Returns - Contra 4/Double Dragon Neon - Bionic Commando: Elite Forces/Bionic Commando 2008 - Pac-Man World/Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness - One of the many Froggers sequels, I'm pretty sure at least one of them was made in Britain - I know a few of the Crash Bandicoot games were made in places besides the US, would that count? - One of the many, many Japanese Lode Runner sequels. - Space Invaders (PS1, the one by Activision) - Sonic 3D Blast

Are we doing Japan/rest of world, or simply 'some other country?". Because if it's the latter, things like Tomb Raider (Legend onward) or even Legacy of Kain (post first game) would qualify.

That's just it, I'm not sure what the exact criteria is when xerxes came up with the category. I'm assuming sequels that went from Japan to the West or vice versa, or sequels made for markets outside of a company's home territory, so stuff like Blaster Master 2 and Snake's Revenge would qualify.

After a brief deliberation among the GC9X staff, we've decided that Bionic Commando: Elite Forces will be our first expat sequel!

Does this mean that there will be multiple games this month?

Neat. It just came out on 3DS e-Shop recently too. I never got around to finishing it back in the day, so maybe I can give it a try.

Those sniper parts are pretty brutal for a GBC game.

Does this mean that there will be multiple games this month? Probably not, unless the game we've chosen is far too short. We could play other games in the Bionic Commando franchise if that's the case, or add another short expat sequel to the docket.

This is a weird game. Like, it feels more like a fan game than a true remake. Not in a bad way, mind you. They nailed the gameplay, and it feels just like Bionic Commando should. They even added a few new features, which is is cool (although the sniping bits are weirdly out of place). However, the added story is total nonsense, and even though the animation is smooth the art itself is really ugly and looks like it was made entirely in MS Paint.
The whole thing has this odd combination of feeling like some kind of rookie indie fan game aesthetically while at the same time being extremely polished and well-crafted mechanically. It's an unusual combination for an official, published game from that era.

A lot of the weirdness is intrinsic to the GBC though - for some reason, most of the games developed specifically for the system have this really weird use of color, and look "blotchy." I agree though, the aesthetic of the game is kind of strange. For some reason the little stumble that the guy does when he touches down on the parachute looks like something from Mobilyte Challenge... Actually, the lack of shading on the characters does too...the mostly super-fluid animations...

A lot of the art has a very cluttered look, as if the game is trying to cram too much detail into too small a space. The character sprites especially look really clumsy and awkward despite having unusually good animation quality for the most part, and I laughed out loud at how hideous the character selection screen was. It seems as though they were trying to go for a clean, cartoon look, but the GBC's low resolution got in the way.

There's a disparity in the color/resolution between the "cinemas" and the actual in-game stuff, I'm wondering if it's them switching between different modes. The cinema stills are odd in how blurry they are (but they seem to have more colors).

I've played a little. Not terribly impressed with it. It plays nearly identical to the NES game but with a few more bells and whistles.
