www.hardcoregaming101.net/neongenesis/neongenesis.htmThere were a number of Neon Genesis Evangelion games, but most of them were adventure games or weird "raise Rei Ayanami as your daughter" sims. This is, as far as I know, the one "action" game based on the anime...though it's still not terribly good.

The first youtube link of music in the game is dead.
Also the concept of Evangelion video games is still weird to me.

Honestly this game was pretty cool when it came out, obviously aged but there aren't many other games like it on the n64. Perhaps the review should mention that it's going to spout out some pretty hefty spoilers regarding character deaths (I know the Anime/Game is old but still, can't hurt to warn people). Also the 2 player mode, which is hidden behind a cheat code is completely absent from being mentioned which lets you play as the angels and increases the games length slightly.

Who took those screenshots? They look awfully emulated, glitchy and not representative of the game. There's a pixel accurate plugin available that gives you original N64 graphics, the photographer should have used that one.

Yeah, gotta ditto the other comments that it's spoiler-y for the anime. It's not a problem for me because I've seen it, and maybe some would scoff at being careful about spoilers for such an old series, and maybe you'd also assume that anyone who'd take interest in reading the article has probably seen it, but I dunno, it's not something that I'd personally include.
It's really cool to see this game covered, although the article is a bit more negative than I would've liked. Don't get me wrong, it's not a great game by any means, but it's not particularly bad either. It's pretty sparse in the gameplay department, but I wouldn't say what's there is unpleasant to play. I'd certainly take it over many, many other licensed anime games. And when I look at the FMV and models and such, I don't think about the N64's limitations, I think "wow this is amazing what they pulled off with this hardware". I feel like the author is comparing it too much to newer hardware or other hardware of the time. Could the FMV have been better on a CD-based system? Sure. But I all but guarantee you that the 3D models would be a far sight worse if it was on, say, PS1. Just judge it for what it is. Which is pretty damn technically impressive, in my opinion.

There's also Pokémon Puzzle League which features an FMV opening

Yeah, several other N64 titles used FMV too, such as StarCraft, Command & Conquer, Gex 3, and others.

Guess i'll pop in again to say yeah, Spoiler Warning at the top of the article would be awesome. Luckily I already know all the twists, but even so.

Ok so did we ever actually reach a consensus regarding using youtube links? 'cause last I remembered they were considered unreliable but somehow this article is riddled with them as well as links to fan wiki pages. And making a very uninformed mistake regarding FMV in N64 games is pretty embarrassing on the author's part.
I also suggest removing the bracketed spoilers from the offending sentence entirely. The existing sentence can get point across by itself just fine.

In regards to other Evangelion games, one worth checking out is Evangelion Battle Orchestra on PS2/PSP, because, well..It's a platform-based fighter akin to stuff like Smash Bros, Dream Mix TV, or the Naruto PS2 games. And the majority of the Angels are playable characters. Yes, it looks as ridiculous as it sounds to see the Angels running and jumping around. Plus it has Gunbuster as a bonus cameo character.

weird "raise Rei Ayanami as your daughter" sims. I'd actually like to know more about that, because that sounds suspiciously like a Princess Maker spinoff I've never heard of. Gainax, the same studio behind NGE, created the Princess Maker series, so I can't say I'd be that surprised.

Gainax, the same studio behind NGE, created the Princess Maker series, so I can't say I'd be that surprised. This refers to the amazingly named Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Raising Project, and it does indeed seem to be Princess Maker featuring Rei. Thanks to wikipedia I now know that it was followed up with the even more amazingly named "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Raising Project with Asuka Supplementing Project"
