I think it's a major confirmation bias that the Japanese have an innate understanding of the platform genre. Have we forgotten High Seas Havoc or Socket or Ardy Lightfoot or Rocky Rodent or Jerry Boy or Tempo or Blender Bros or...

No one has forgotten, but like I said on a previous post, you take the best european/western platformer of the era and it only manages to match a mediocre Japanese game, like the ones you mentioned. I know, I was just hyperbolin'.
