El Nard! Sounds like the name of a disgraced Spanish baron.
There are a bunch of ROM hacks available for this one to improve the balance, though I'm not sure which of them is "definitive".

I remember reading that the adjusting of the player's stat gains makes beating the other characters next to impossible if you level up too much, because they scale with your character's level.

I remember having to reach all the way to up level 80 to be able to beat the last boss.
I ended up liking the game, specially back then when there was an RPG drought. The music is really awesome though. The map, towns, dungeon and battle music are really great.

IIRC the localization messed up the stat gains, making it way harder than the japanese version.
I played through the game using a "fixed" rom. Not a bad game, but not that good either. Getting lost on the world map was the big problem.

I remember reading that the adjusting of the player's stat gains makes beating the other characters next to impossible if you level up too much, because they scale with your character's level. Basically the US version lowered the growth rate of the player characters, but when the other characters appear as enemies, their stats are calculated using the Japanese growth curves. Also, did the game tell you the order you're supposed to use the runes to reduce the last boss' stats? I only beat it at like level 55 or so because I had the Nintendo Power issue with the solution. Also, supposedly Mystic Ark was planned for a US release as 7th Saga II, but it was canned when Enix America went dormant for five years, taking out Dragon Warrior VI, Tactics Ogre and Creation of Heaven and Earth/Genesis/Terranigma as well.

The difficulty really is insane in the US. There's actually a glitch even in the Japanese game where characters don't learn spells as soon as they're supposed to, but by the time the US localization was happening that wasn't going to get fixed up at all making it pretty much one of the hardest RPGs ever that's still a functioning good game overall.
I really do love when you get dropped onto the second continent, I love all the different overworld themes in general. It just stinks if you didn't grind enough before both of those shifts in the story since you can't go back. If you can't dependably win those first couple of battles you might end up having to start over.
Also, while some of the heroes hate each other more than others, making it harder to join up with them, contrary to what Nintendo Power said back in the day you actually can get Lejes/Esuna and Lejes/Valsu together, it will just take many many attempt, and has to be early enough in the game one of them won't just attack the other on sight.

I have the 7th Saga "Easier Version" (AKA Japanese version fan translated). Looking forward to play it one day.
Nice article from what I skimmed. Will have to revisit it more thoroughly once I finally play and beat this game.

I managed to beat the game with Olvan and Esuna on the SNES. Great game, but Jesus Christ was it hard. I started up the patched version last year and found it to be a lot easier to enjoy. You can just focus on playing the game instead of grinding all the time.
That second continent was a huge mindfuck, though. I had to restart the first time I ran across the shift, because the game DOES NOT prepare you for losing all of the runes like that. Weapons and equipment become crazy expensive at that point, too.
Still, there's just something about the whole game that I can't help but appreciate. I'm kind of confused as to whether the ending actually counts as a "win" or not, as well.

I eventually cheated at this game by using an emulator. It was easier just to give a ton of experience as opposed to leveling. The game was still tedious, though (with a somewhat interesting story). The late fight with character who could heal himself wasn't too much of a problem since moves are randomly chosen by the AI, apparently (save states may have helped or the fact cheating with Lux had him dealing huge amounts of damage).
This game appeared in Game Center CX during a South Korean game store segment. The Chief bought two copies of it for some reason, but didn't seem to realize it. Going by the save files, Japanese gamers didn't get very far in the game either. I'm hoping Chief Arino comes back to the US and encounters the game a third time just for the humor of it.
