Ii just played hero core and I really love its graphics. And I wondered, how many more low-key indie modern indie games are out there with a very, very low-key-low tech look, with graphics that seem reminiscent of what the original gameboy or the zx spectrum could do. I myself could not think of too many examples, sady: Herocore, Don't look back, tower of heaven- that's all I can think of right now. What else fits the bill, and who else likes this kind of look as much as I do?

Some games really nail this aesthetic. MURI is great at replicating the Apogee EGA feel, Rock Boshers DX pulls a Spectrum, Retro City Rampage behaves like a Nintendo game but also features filters for Game Boy, C64, and amber scale...

First of all, thanks for teaching me about Hero Core.
My mind immediately went to You Have To Win the Game. Can't think of many others at the time.
Also, nice job on the thread title.

I Am Level
L'Abbaye Des Morts
Dunno if they count, but there're DizzyAge games which reuse assets from (but not limited to) Dizzy's ZX Spectrum games, sometimes recreating said games wholesale. However, the engine is entirely fan-made.
Plasma Warrior (sorta; it has that low-res, neon-and-black aesthetic)
As for gameboy, there is AXRIA Retro World.

As much as I like retro city rampage, for me it is not really "minimalistic",seeing how much there is going on at one time on the screen, so much fluent animation.... It looks really great, but I remember the first time playing "wow, old games never looked like this........" Kind of forgott about Muri and L'Abbaye Des Morts, they are both great. Thanks for reminding me. And thanks for the other suggestions, I'll check them out.
Uh,I just remembered one more- VVVVV. I'd guess this is the first "minimalist" looking modern game I played

I was gonna mention VVVVVV, but it's surely something beyond a Spectrum's ken. Like Dino Run and Lyle in Cube Sector.
Really retraux games are too numerous to list.

Can't believe I forgot VVVVVV. That's one of my favorite indie games.

Teleglitch: Die More Edition is basically Quake I/II with lo-fi pixel art. And also as an arena shooter. Should be up your alley.
