www.hardcoregaming101.net/madmax/madmax.htmWith the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, we're taking a look back at the two Mad Max video games - an official one for the NES, and Outlander for the Genesis/SNES, which had to drop the name and references when the publisher failed to secure the license.

Looking forward to the Avalanche Mad Max game. Even if it ends up amounting to little more than a glorified Just Cause mod, I'd still be satisfied.
Outlander has a special little place in my heart for the reasons specified in the article. As redundant as it is, it's still insane fun in short bursts. I'd love to see a modern remake that retains the style, but adds some substance and variety with better on-foot sections (preferably top-down instead of sidescrolling), as the overall structure of the game is quite reminiscent of something like Oregon Trail and would make for a nice indie game in that vein.

Yeah I love Outlander too despite its faults. It really is the coolest game ever made if you never play it for more than like 45 minutes at a time. I'm glad the upcoming game is using a similar formula but with more freedom when outside of the car.

I recall seeing screen shot of Outlander in an old issue of C+VG (Or possibly Mean Machines) and recall the article saying the game looked good, but seemed a bit lite on for content. Interesting to see that they were right.
Funny to see the sunglasses edited on in the SNES port. Seems that whenever 2D edit a pair of sun glasses on somebody, they look horrible (Duke Nukem 2 did the same thing and they looked crap).
I do kinda like how the SNES port shows the PCs face in the rearview mirror, like Lucky n' Wild. I'm surprised more games don't do that.

I knew Outlander as a little "cult" game but I've never known it was supposed to be a licensed Mad Max game until now.
The upcoming game is very promising: Avalanche and their previous experience on Just Cause (they are also working on a third episode right now) seem to be the perfect fit for the character and setting. The article should remove the mention of PS3 and 360 as release platforms, however: those versions were confirmed as cancelled last March.

Oh yeah totally (especially the C64) version. Even their Dirty Harry NES game uses a lot of similar assets for the menus and stuff.

I must confess I never played Outlander, Despite it languishing on store shelves and bargain bins for years.
But the screenshots REALLY reminded me of Technocop. is it anything like that? (love the title screen music)

Sweet! Yeah I will do, also loved Technocops insane amount of gore as a kid too (rest of the game was pretty crap though - then again it was based on a Spectrum game) BTW, it's quite ironic that Fist of the North Star was hugely based on Mad Max has a bajillion games made about it, but Mad Max only gets three.

That might be a result of how movie licenses work in the US. Not entirely sure, but there are plenty of "Mad Max but not" games, such as Redline, which is the spiritual successor to the Lynx game BattleWheels. One of my favorite post apocalyptic car combat games is Bandits: Phoenix Rising, which was made by the late, great Grin.

It's definitely an assured way to success. Pirates of the Caribbean on XBox/PC was the same, it was an unrelated Sea Dogs game. There's also stuff like the NES version of Rambo where they used Zelda II as a basis for it. Speaking of which, it's more 80s action movie than post apocalyptic, but I love Avalanche's Renegade Ops. Check it out if you haven't. I'm really hyped about their actual Mad Max game too.

Renegade Ops is awesome. Kinda like GI Joe on wheels.

Now that the new Mad Max game had been out for almost a year, the article could do with an update. I did have some good times with the game, but ironically it pretty much suffers from the exact same problems that Outlander has - vehicle sections are immensely fun, but the on-foot parts are just a bloody chore .
