Bionic Commando Rearmed. Hard Corps Uprising. Double Dragon Neon. Castle of Illusions 2013. TMNT Re-Shelled. Castlevania Rebirth. Contra Rebirth. R-Type Dimensions. Puzzle Fighter Turbo HD Remix. Commando 3... Etc!
Last generation (XBOX 360/PS3) was when Remakes became a thing of their own. There were some fantastic successes, and the Remakes industry was born, and seems to be still going strong. Now, before our memories get fuzzy... Which were the good ones? Which were the great ones? And which were the turds?
The time has come for a debriefing on the whole Remakes phenomenon, what you think of it, why you think that way, and which are the ones that are good- and why are they good in relation to the originals? Go crazy!

New ones only, or also stuff like the Sierra remakes from the early 90s, or stuff like the GBA remakes?

New ones only, or also stuff like the Sierra remakes from the early 90s, or stuff like the GBA remakes? Starting with the PS3, so the new ones, when that niche exploded and every company licensed old IPs for a remake! That being said... If you have a truly outstanding Sierra remake on your mind, don't hesitate to make an exception.

Castlevania chronicles x. Crap graphics aside the remake improved on the original subtlety added some great new bosses and replaced the kind of crappy alternative stage 5 with a pretty great stage.

I'm on the fence regarding the Castlevania X remake. First of all, it really was pretty ugly. The inclusion of the original justs twists the knife in the wound. But it played well, and a bit different from the original. I liked it, but they were wise to include the original and SoN with it on what became a must-have UMD. So yeah, it's an okay remake, but it's second-tier: it brings almost nothing better, and the remade graphics are a bit so-so. Not that I don't enjoy it immensely, because such is the power of classic Castlevania! Did anyone play both this one and Castlevania Rebirth? Which comes on top?

I like the general idea of remakes, but it seems like a lot of the devs are out of touch with the qualities people enjoyed about the originals, recapturing the aesthetics but miffing some other important element (challenge, control scheme).
That said, Hard Corps Uprising was awesome, but I don't think it counts as a remake so much as a spinoff/sequel. It's really great though!
1942: Joint Strike was ugly and slow-paced; alright compared to the original 1942 maybe, but not on the same level as 19XX/1944.
After Burner Climax is beautiful and at least on the original's level.
Mega Man Powered Up had that overly cutesty art direction, but it had all that extra content that made it worth experiencing for fans.
That's all I've played at the moment. Anyone try Wipeout HD or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD?

The 3DS remakes of Dragon Quest Monsters 1 and 2 are really great, especially the second one. The key system was totally reworked in 2 and I think it was for the better.

You've reminded me that I need to (re)try playing the recent Ys games. I don't know if they count, though. I really like the play-style, but I didn't get very far with The Oath in Felghana for some reason.

Neither Contra ReBirth nor Hard Corps: Uprising are remotely remakes; they're just flat-out new sequels in the series. They're both pretty good though.
Anyways, I think one remake that will always be counted among the best is the Resident Evil REmake. They truly did take an already good game and make it better in nearly every way.

Anyone try Wipeout HD or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD? Yeah, Hard Corps Uprising is really top-tier in every way. It's just a really great game. The spin-off aspect is pretty clearly assumed by the developpers, what with the Contra name being removed and all, but Uprising is a game hardcore players should have in their library. I prefer it, as a sequel/spin-off, to Wayforward's Contra 4 on DS. By far. 1942 was awful. Commando 3 was a least fun to play.but both those remakes just sullied the Capcom name, and Im sure everybody concerned would rather forget about them... I'd say Climax is a proper sequel, with new mechanics (the climax gauge),and presented as such. And yeah, it's an absolutely superlative game which is at least at the level of the original. WipeOut HD is, if I'm not mistaken, an upscaled port of the second PSP WipeOut game. I don't think it's a remake, it's more of an upgraded port...

I liked Duck Tales They added just the right amount of new stuff while keeping my nostalgia intact. Castle of Illusion felt really strange to me though. I just didn't get the right feeling for it. Note: the original Castle of Illusion and Duck Tales were some of my favorite and most memorable childhood gaming experiences so I do not take these things lightly.

When I think of great video game remakes, three immediately come to mind:
Resident Evil (2002) - Already mentioned. The cool thing about it, though, is that it alters the events of the first game just enough so that it specifically messes with people familiar with the original. Brilliant way to make the game scary again.
Metroid: Zero Mission - This is the kind of remake that doesn't really replace the original, but rather stands as a great game on its own while still maintaining the feel of the original.
Shadowgate (2014) - I almost want to compare this with the Resident Evil remake in that its faithful to the original, but remixes things a tad (varying based on the difficulty setting). Keeping the game in 2D, using beautifully detailed paintings, and augmenting it with great sound effects, voice acting, and an orchestral score, make it drip with the atmosphere it was always meant to have. (It's amazing that despite the dark atmosphere, it never feels oppressive. It's dark in an "up" kind of way.) This remake was clearly rattling around in the developers' heads for many years.

I too really enjoyed Ducktales. Could never bring myself to finish Castle of Illusion though. It bored me to tears.
Ys: The Oath in Felghana is still my favorite Ys game. The brevity, excellent boss battles, rocking music, and decent story make it the best in the series. I liked VII and the remake of IV on the Vita but both are a little too long. Oath's 10 hours or so is just the right amount of time. I haven't played the any of the original 16 bit versions of Ys: III but from what I read Oath in Felghana is an improvement in nearly every way.
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl is another really good remake. Adding a story mode but leaving an option to play in classic mode was brilliant for making the game accessible to new players and veterans alike.
Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth? Just kidding.
Oh and of course Mega Man Powered Up. Best remake ever.

Here's one for the Less Good section: Elevator Action Deluxe on PS3. Not great; actually kind of frustrating.
