Quite a bizarre little bastard. I'm still wondering what the hell was possessing Bobby Prince to use that odd Tetris-esque tune for the sewer stage .

Say what you will about the music. At least you gotta give Prince props for somehow making an action shooter level theme based around the melody of Pop Goes The Weasel!

This game plays host to probably my absolute favorite FM-powered gunfire sounds. Firing off an entire ammo stock of machine gun has never been so satisfying, coming from an AdLib board, as it is here. "Br-bb-b-b-b-browwww!"

I admit I have kind of a soft spot for Bio Menace's soundtrack just because of how out of place it sounds at times. I alro remember some levels being a huge pain in the neck.

Good game. I like it more than Duke Nukem.... Never knew it runs on the same Engine as Keen. And yes, the gun sound is SO AWESOME!

Quite a bizarre little bastard. I'm still wondering what the hell was possessing Bobby Prince to use that odd Tetris-esque tune for the sewer stage . Hearing that carnival music while running through the sewer has to be one of my weirdest gaming experiences. Say what you will about the music. At least you gotta give Prince props for somehow making an action shooter level theme based around the melody of Pop Goes The Weasel! I've gotta admit, he pulled it off. I don't know what the hell was going through his mind when he decided to try it in the first place, but somehow, by some force, he pulled it off.

Hm, I can't find this game on Apogee's site. They had a Bio Menace page on their site some three years ago. I don't know why they took it down, but I couldn't find it either.

Happy to know that its still freeware. Bunch of games through the years have lost their freeware status ("The license was bought and the game was put back on sale", "It was only for limited time on that site only" etc.) and for a while I thought this happened to some 3D realms games too what with the Anthology Pack they released.

That was one reason I didn't buy the Anthology: a majority of the games are still freeware.

Great article as usual. I never felt the music was as bad as described in the article, but I have to agree on the difficulty / cheapness. It's extremely hard to avoid damage, and a lot of the levels have so many enemies in a given area, that your hitpoints just drop one after the other. In the later levels even the medikits are not frequent enough. Worst of all, it feels that the excessive difficulty cannot be overcome by practicing / learning tricks. It's just "cheap" and unfair. I beat each of the three episodes exactly once, and never felt like going through any of them again, because of that. It just feels like more chore than fun, which is a shame for a game with such technological merit.

I remember playing the shareware version of this game a bunch back in the day, tho it was never one of my preferred Apogee titles. Still nice to see the old Apogee Classics getting a write up

I love Apogee's games. As a kid growing up in the 90s, their games were quite entertaining and I spent a lot of time with them, even the shareware versions. Seeing an article for one of them definitely puts a smile on my face. And reading the catalogs that came with their games was sort of interesting to do every now and then.
I always thought Bio Menace was cool, though I never have managed to stick with it long enough to beat it and give it a more thorough look. I need to do that someday.
