Around that time (70s - mid 80s), murder mysteries and whodunnits had somewhat of a revival in the United States after the previous '30s-40s craze. Heck the Clue movie came out a couple years after this game.
Never played the game, but looks quite interesting. I've generally enjoyed these sorts of adventure games.
