I always thought the phrase "Nintendo hard" is weird and misleading. Back in the day, not only NES games were hard- all games were, be it on home computers, in the arcades or on home consoles. And this is not only true for action-oriented games. I'd argue that RPGs, Adventures, Strategy games, etc. were all harder in the mid 80ies-early 90ies than they are today! I mean, think of the unforgiving designs of the early Sierra Adventure titles, with tons of deaths and unwinnable situations... XCOM, BABY!

XCOM, BABY! I don't get the joke since I only played the first game..... Can you explain it,please? The joke is that all iterations of XCOM are cruelly hard, but the original 1990s version was both iron-hard and very complicated compared to the reboot.

The original X-COM is hard, true, but it has various difficulty settings. Most 1980s adventures had tons of dead ends and insta-deaths, plus a confusing parser. Hell, western RPGs had all that plus grinding and luck-based encounters. With X-COM, you at least know what you're getting at.

The more I think about it, the more I am tempted to say that home computer games were harder than NES games;) Anyway, the thing about X-COM, aigan, is true for all rebooted classic game series, right? Think of wasteland,Fallout, and so on...

While all platforms were tough back then, Nintendo is the more popular and recognizable in a retro sense. At least it is here in the States, where I imagine "Nintendo-hard" originated.

I tend to think "this guy probably didn't play anything but NES/SNES back then" when I hear the term used.

To give more context, no one actually called it the "En-ee-es" or "ness" back then, but simply the "Nintendo." When I was a kid in school in the 80s, no one ever called a NES "En-ee-es" or "ness" I agree, but it was often pronounced "nez". As for the original topic, I agree with everyone who said old NES games were contrived-hard in order to increase the amount of time they took to complete.

^It's not that bad, especially once you figure out what Counter Force does and utilize it in conjunction with Zero Teleport. Then there's "SuperEasy" mode, which reduces damage a bit, and gives out infinite continues, with no penalties toward seeing the end game. Also, the U.S. never got it anyway . As for the topic, Moran's post pretty much sums up Elektrolurch's curiosity about why Nintendo gets the credit here.

Nintendo hard is like the the dumbest term ever to come out of the gaming community.

Nintendo Hard is a new term because nowadays games are piss easy and very afraid to kill the player unlike old games that where not afraid of it and such a new age gamer who picks a Ni tendo era game will very certainly notice they are hard.
