For the purposes of this thread, "classic" is largely defined as "pre-Halo", though there can be exceptions---Unreal Tournament 2k4 and the newer Serious Sams, for example, as well as any long-running tactical shooter franchises like Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon and newer tactical shooters taking direct inspiration from the earliest installments of those games.
Other example: Gears of War is a bit modern for this thread, but WinBack is perfect conversation fodder.
-----
The GOG port of Quake is very good, fully-featured (aside from the lack of music but IMHO the ambient sound design is good enough that the game is perfectly fine without a soundtrack) and user-friendly. Also, I keep getting lost in Red Faction 1 because the levels keep giving me big bright "PUT BOMB HERE FOR SHORTCUT/GOODIES" cues more often than it gives travel directions.
Also, I love DooM. I think I've spent more time playing it and mods for it than any other game I have ever owned. Period.

Same here, I binged on a lot of the Steam/GoG sales, they had the Descent and Painkiller series' too.

FYI: The GOG version should have music if you run the Dosbox version. It also contains the CD image, so you can... you know, mount the image (or burn it to disc) then Quake will play the CD audio from the disc/image. Totally worth it. In other news, I'm playing Doom again. The WAD of choice right now is Doom the Way id Did, which is kinda sorta like playing Doom 1 all over again. It has thematically similar progression, but totally new levels. Enjoying it so far, but most of Episode 1 was pretty easy. To be fair, that's pretty much the same as the original too . I'm also raring to play some custom levels in quake 1. I just recently discovered www.quaddicted.com/ . I think I'll be set for a while.

Quake Injector is pretty cool, but it has a few flaws. The highest-ranked maps on there range from "how'd they make this so awesome?" to "how'd they make this so terrible?" Doom may be id Software's king in most people's eyes, but I always prefered Quake. No real clue why. After all, most of the time I'm getting my ass kicked in multiplayer, so bad sometimes it makes me consider if I really should be practicing how to bunnyhop. Regardless, the single-player campaigns in each are some of my favorites (yes, even the multiplayer-only Quake 3. Yes, even though you get this as your ending.)

It's amazing that how no matter how bad FPS endings can be, none will ever be as bad as the ending to Unreal 1.

I dunno, I think Unreal 2's tops the original for worst ending, especially since it was the exact same fucking ending under stupider pretenses!
But yeah, always preferred Quake over Doom, too. Something about the darker atmosphere and physics really drew me in as a teen. It helped that the mods were so much more interesting earlier on than Doom's.

I preferred quake back in the day, solely for the better multiplayer experience. (really, I didn't start until quake 2, which had a decent mod community)
As for favorite shooters, I'd have to mention Tyrian; solid action, full and weird customizations, and a very strange sense of humor that is a total trip (especially chapter 5)

I kind of miss the really creative mod communities of the late 90s. There were some amazing total conversions and gameplay mods for Quake 2 and Half-Life. Stuff like AirQuake 2 (flight sim combat! in Quake 2!), Sabaneta 2050, Dawn of Darkness, Rocket Crowbar, Poke646, the Soldier of Fortune, Inc. and Coconut Monkey maps for Quake 2, and (arguably) Gunman Chronicles, even though that one wound up getting released standalone instead of as an HL conversion.

surnshurn: We're more talking first-third person shooters here than shmups, although Space Invaders counts as the first-ever cover shooter if you want to get technical.

Back in the early to mid ninties, I myself binged on fpses- good (Doom, Hexen,Descent,Duke 3D,Blood)and bad(Corridor 7,Skaphander, depth dwellers..) As long as it had a first person view and bad things to shoot, I was in. BTW, I would define "classic shooters" somewhat different as the op, because games like unreal or esp. Half-Life feel very different and way more connected to modern shooters than Doom or Wolf 3D;) I'd argue that the early id shooters come more from an arcade-like design philosophy (Wolf 3D even had lifes and score and such),while with Half-Life,you for the first time got (for me)believable, immersive worlds to interact with, which made you think they weren't just there for you to shoot things in.

I played a few memorable quake 2 mods. one called 'chaos' that was a pretty wacky weapons mod with a few pretty good custom levels. Another one called 'qpong' that I read about in a magazine and had a giant metal ball that you'd try and propel using damage into an enemey goal. There was also a soccer mod that was pretty entertaining. Another game that stands out is 'Starsiege: Tribes' which was best known for ctf but had a great deathmatch mode.

I largely played the first Quake on N64 only, and while far from perfect I still like the port. Quake 2 and 3 are my faves though. Q2 for the single player and all the hidden areas (You found a secret, you crazy rocketjumper!!) and Q3A for it's refined and turbo fast gameplay. The game is the reason that I feel I'd control a bag of concrete in every newer FPS. I also love the Serious Sam games for it's batshit insane amount of enemies it throws at you (and those giant hordes are still impressive) and its humor. This is also one of the reasons FarCry3 and especially Blood Dragon are one of the few modern FPS I really like. First it hardly takes it self serious, and If you want to, you can almost rampage around like in the good old days, despite its many modern gameplay elements, even more so in Blood Dragon. (on the other hand I also like to play the game like a Metal Gear, but that's what's so nice about it. It leaves the option how you approach it to yourself) I'd say the crazy over-the-topness is also an important element of many old shooters, that made them so enjoyable. At least for me Though, somehow I never really could get into Unreal. ^^'
BTW w00t! 600 posts!

I just wanna take a second to say how much I love LucasArts' FPSes. I always love the cut-scenes they include, even if the typical classic FPS wasn't heavy on cut-scenes. I've barely watched any Star Wars, but I love Dark Forces. Outlaws is pretty cool too.

I wish more versus FPSes had superpowers as creatively abusable as the Jedi Knight series.
