Not only is Truxton 2 a great game, it also features an unmistakably Toaplan soundtrack.

Gradius ReBirth - A journey to the start remix
I just love the Parodius soundtracks, but especially those tracks
Compile made some of the best GG PSG tracks ever

Nice selection! I'll always regret not having been able to play Gradius Rebirth...

Oh, before I forget, I got a rarity here: a port of Slap Fight on the Mega Drive - Years after the game had been releasedn arcades - that features a complete new soundtrack by... Yuzo Koshiro himself! I don't understand why it is not famous. It's pure STG music anyway. Old-school perfection!

Wow, that track from Slap Fight is really nice. I mostly knew Koshiro for his RPG soundtracks, but it looks like he could comppose for shmups well, too.
I don't think Sol-Feace is very well known, but I enjoy its soundtrack (seems like every Wolfteam game does well in that area, at least).

Streets of Rage, Super Adventure Island, Super Shinobi, Actraiser 1... Koshiro is good in every style of music, in every genre of game! That's why he is so legendary. But I guess his work on Ys was so good, it led people to believe he was an RPG composer. Koshiro is really someting else. PS: His work on Ys is still perfect; listen to this... So, sooo good!

I was born a couple of years before the 21st century started, so I think I've got the age excuse when it comes to not being aware of his other works (though I've played SoR and Actraiser, which both have really good soundtracks). Slightly more on topic: one decent shmup track that reminds me a bit of Feel Blue from Ys is this. but that's probably more because of the violin than anything else.

"Our smartbombs are bigger!" "Our smartbombs are more powerful!" "Ha! Our smartbombs make skull shaped explosions!"

Nice picks! Really digging that R-Type Leo track. Pretty much every Twinbee game has a great soundtrack. I love that series so much. I have Pop'n and the Detana Twinbee Yahho Deluxe pack and I bring them out every so often to play through them again.

The ingame tune from NES Section Z in all its grooviness:
And Rob Hubbard taking a cue from Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi for Delta's title music.

This thread is shaping up very nicely!
I know I'm cheating by posting the same song again, but recently I found out that there's an official album with FM versions of the Akai Katana soundtrack! They are as good as the original tracks.

Nice! I'm liking those FM versions. Here's some from a lesser known Compile PC-98 shmup called Rude Breaker.

The Dreamcast always had some of my favourite SHMUP OST's. I've never been good at anything in this genre, and always play on easy, but I love them all the same. Here are some of my favourites:
