I remember really liking the game's style and atmosphere, but never got very far as I kept dying to the spider or the bank fight part.

This is one of my favorite games ever. I love <3 <3 <3 the shit out of this game. This an Planescape: Torment are the first two cRPGs I really played. It set kind of a high bar.
This is the IP that I would love more than anything to get some kind of sequel. I would throw all my money at this.
I think the setting and world in the game is some of the best. Even among Steampunk settings it still pretty unique on how it takes a Tolkien-esque fantasy world and puts it in the industrial revolution.
Will, admit this game is clunky as shit though. I remember a few years ago a friend tried playing it because she was applying to work at a studio Tim Cain was working at the time. Yeah, she got super frustrated with it. Like there is very little explanation on how to do some very basic things in the game (How to use a shovel. I'm looking at you.).
As for the bugs I ran into my far share but somehow it never bothered me too much. Though, GOG does have a forum post that explains how to had a few mods that will fix most of the bugs, and do a few other nice things. It is totally worth doing if you are going to play the game.
I still has my physical copy with the manual. Which is also like a whole world history book also. Which is super awesome. Said friend was pretty impressed with it and how much content is in it.

Good game and good article, which points out exactly the games problem. I loved it when I first played it, but never finished it. And I hated how it is much easier as a magic user......seriously unballanced, yet still a must play in my opinion.

It is very ironic that Troika's second game, The Temple of Elemental Evil, was in many ways the polar opposite of Arcanum, with an absolutely exemplary combat system, but extremely generic narrative and world building, despite its D&D roots. Of course, what both games would sadly wind up sharing was an unintuitive interface and loads upon loads of bugs.

There was one point where I was really into this game because of how much it is like Fallout 2. Then I got stuck in a combat part and lost all interest. This Black Isle-Troika-Obsidian kliq knows their world building, but they should probably learn to sacrifice few things for the sake of more stable gameplay.
I've played the multiplayer with couple of friends as well. Its real shame it brings down the game to its most basic element which sucks in the first place and that we coulnd't find any maps that would emphasize anything other than combat, but at least we had some fun just dicking around.

I remember being literally drawn into this game for days only to gradually lose interest in it. It was very ambitious for sure and for the most part it really delivered. Of course, it wouldn't be a Troika game if it hadn't more bugs than a termite nest...
