www.hardcoregaming101.net/klax/klax.htmAfter infamously running into legal issues with Tetris, Atari set off to make their own falling brick puzzle game, one that utilized 3D graphics in interesting ways.

Yikes, look at that list of available systems.
My cousins used to own the Turbo version so I grew up with this one, though I was never particularly good at it. It was a lot of fun all the same.

The article makes consistent use of the word "pallete", shouldn't it be "palette"?
I knew this game had many ports (I may have played the DOS one many years ago) but never expected to be so many; the most interesting part is about MegaDrive / Genesis and Gameboy having two different versions of the game each. Different localized ports of games are always fascinating.

Another game that seems to draw inspiration from Klax is Audiosurf (and maybe some of its predecessors?). Difference is that blocks are based on the beats and stages are less of a conveyor belt and more of a rollercoaster ride.
Amazing how many ports this game got, yet not a single sequel.

This was kind of the headliner game for a TV show about video games I used to see occasionally in the 90s in Germany (might have been a British show, as most of them are). They also used to play an NES game with that skateboard peripheral. I want to say the show was also named Klax, but I'm not entirely sure, and apparently there's now a TV station called Klax-TV, which makes researching impossible...

Is it really that hard to see the colors on Amiga? Can't imagine a system with a palette as sizable as the Amiga having that problem.
Also weird how the GBC is the only system to have an endless mode.

It's not the 90s anymore, but it's still time for Klax. I've mainly played it on the Amiga and I remember it being very addictive even thought the frantic pace was quite overwhelming at times. Is it really that hard to see the colors on Amiga? Can't imagine a system with a palette as sizable as the Amiga having that problem. Klax, like many other early Amiga games, suffered from being a direct port from the weaker Atari ST rather than being directly developed for the Amiga. It was a very common practice back then especially with coin-op conversions; I guess that it was done mainly to cut costs.

Pretty good article! Klax is one of my fav puzzle titles of the time, so good. Also I'll admit that there were some ports I had no idea about.
Both Arcade Party Pak and the original Midway Arcade Treasures (but not Extended Play) have an interview with Klax's devs with some interesting anecdotes, including one about the Japanese getting confused by its name.
...also, the port comparison section has a screenshot for the fanmade X68K version but not one for the official port.

LOL
But yeah, Klax! One of the principal obsessions of my early youth. Many hours spent contemplating the mysteries of the universe during deep, reflective sessions of Blob Ball.

As far as I can tell by screenshots, though, it's about identical to the arcade version, since that was the 68000's thing.

There must be something wrong with the disk image of Klax for the X68000, both emulators I tried with it didn't work (it flat out crashed one of them).

I think I have to nitpick: "Yes, there was an Atari 2600 version, despite the fact that this port came out 11 years after the release of the console." Wasn't the 2600 released in 1977? So 11 years would mean 1988. Make that more like 13 years after the original release of the 2600....

By the way, wasn't Klax the last official game released commercially for the 2600?
