Ah, the first Neo Geo title I bought off the Virtual Console. I did notice that the flashing effect for the Power Gems you find was changed to a solid golden look.

This game owns, it really is like a Treasure game too. Also yet another attempted mascot for SNK that disappeared. They never could settle, even on the same game often the US version would have Terry Bogard on the cover while the Japanese version would feature Kyo Kusanagi. They made all these excellent games with tons of references and connections to each other but never really unified them with their marketing.

I love this game, probably my favorite Neo Geo non-fighting game.
Great to see it on Hardcore Gaming 101! Awesome article!

Shouldn't it be called Top Hunter: Roddy and Cathy in the title? I know Gamefaqs and some sites omit the subtitle but, well, they're wrong. This happens with Atomic Runner Chelnov: Nuclear Man, The Fighter. A lot of sites call it Chelnov: Atomic Runner but that isn't its name. Formation Armed F is similarly listed as Armed Formation F on lots of sites.

I think the article should mention the Japanese version has like 6 different endings. You get them by defeating one specific last boss with a specific special move. Depending on which last boss you defeat with a move, you'll get a different ending.

Why must every SNK game that is not a shooter have beat-'em-up elements? Anyway, cool game, vaguely remember it from the arcades, even if I never did go too far in it. I was a little kid...

Is there a way to play as Cathy if you're playing solo?

There is, yes, but you need to bind a key to "Player 2 Start" in MAME's general control settings, assuming you're using that emulator.

Just put a quarter in the right coin slot instead of the left.

If only it were that easy! :p
While on the subject of Neo Geo machines, I swear you could queue up a continue by inserting a coin, then hitting the start button while a game was in play. It would then automatically continue once you game overed. Was that an actual thing, or am I crazy?

This is not an actual thing. But you may be thinking of how the MVS cabinet handles selecting a game and the timer on that and in the game itself depending on the dip switch settings and whether or not it already has coins in it.

Just put a quarter in the right coin slot instead of the left. Odd thing is when the emulator is set to arcade it won't let me start the game on the 2nd player side. I can start on the second player side if the emulator is set to console.

Are you using MAME? I don't have it on this computer but I want to say Kawaks will let you do use the player 2 side in arcade mode. I've come to like it a lot more for Neo Geo stuff in general. If you overlap the controls in MAME you could start a two player game and then only continue with player 2 from then on. I know Art of Fighting 1 and maybe a couple of the other earlier games on the system are a pain with this but IIRC everything from 1993 and on should let you start on either side in arcade mode. I'm glad in later stuff like Metal Slug 2 and Ganryuu they just let you pick which character you want to use.

Tried both on Kawaks and Mame same thing.
Also a minor thing I noticed, if you set the machine to Arcade, EUR or JPN the credit display only appears on the bottom right side of the screen, can only start the game on P1 side.
When set to Arcade, USA the credit display appears on both side, but I can't toggle coin on the p2 or right side.
