www.hardcoregaming101.net/undertale/undertale.htmThe Best Game of All Time, according to this year's GameFAQs poll. We felt it was a little too early to make that call (it got a runner-up spot in our 200 Best Games book), but this charming, offbeat RPG is still worthy of anyone's attention.

And not to sound like a parade-raining kind of person, but given the way the other thread has gone thus far:
Please keep this thread's discussion either about Undertale itself, or about the article. Off-topic posts will probably be moved elsewhere.

Sans = Temmie > Napstablook > Undyne > Mettaton > Papyrus > Asgore > Everyone Else (but they're all great)

I have my doubts that Undertale is really the best game of all time, but I find the idea of a 2015 game being heralded as that charming, I don't see why that would piss someone off.

I'd imagine because certain communities are extremely resistant to change. And that's exactly what I like about the idea, there's such an ingrained idea in much of gaming culture that somewhere along the way gaming "went wrong" and a modern game could never hope to compete with the classics of the 80's and 90's, Undertale winning that poll is like a middle finger to that idea and I like that, because even if Undertale isn't, who's to say a modern game couldn't be the best of all time?

"Best Game of All Time" tends to be a pretty loaded title (not to mention the most over-used). Isn't that like choosing the best book ever written? It's just hyperbole.
Though in hindsight it's funny in that it beats out all those other games that cost tens of millions of dollars to produce. That's like a 50s live teleplay being hailed as the best thing ever filmed. Or a street-side play being hailed as the greatest thing in theater.
Does that mean we are in the John Cassavetes era of video-gaming?
I guess I've got to play Undertale and then be disappointed I may have played one game I liked better.

yeah, I also just can't believe how far we've went. we used to get space marines and dudes with swords and now that games have matured we have clever deconstructions like Undertale, Spec Ops: The Line and Ultima IV. oh wait.
that personal pet peeve aside, good article although I'd personally prefer an in-depth analysis which includes full spoilers. IMHO the game is more interesting to talk about when you're not side-stepping around its most interesting parts.

I find it funny that Undertale fell victim to the same thing Homestuck (the other project Toby Fox was involved with at one point) did - both are unique and outstanding works in their genre, but they're also overhyped to the point of bringing disappointment to those who expected the "greatest thing ever" after reading all the praise on the net. Hype culture sucks, what more can I say

Exactly, the truth is there is no such thing as "the best game of all time", it's a completely subjective thing. You can certainly narrow down all time greats to a list of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and so on, but picking one singular game as the all time best is pretty much impossible. For one thing, how do judge that? Do you judge a game by the impact of it's story, the emotions you feel during it or simply by how fun to play it is? How complex yet elegant the design is or how impressive it is on a technical level and so on, video games are a different medium than music, movies and books, there's more to take into account. I think everyone has their own personal greatest of all time list, I would nominate either Silent Hill 2, Deus Ex or Half Life 2 for the award of greatest of all time because I think they each fit these 3 different aspects, Silent Hill 2 tells the best story in video games, Deus Ex is one of the most richly complex and deep games and Half Life 2 is the most technically impressive (in context of it's 2004 release) while also being an absolute blast to play.

My sister gave me a Steam key for this and its been sitting on my Steam library for a month now. I think I'll wait up for all the fuzz to die out until I give it a try.

Good article but it'd be cool if it had a character page while at the same time not giving massive spoilers.

Good article but it'd be cool if it had a character page while at the same time not giving massive spoilers. I'd imagine that would be pretty difficult, especially with certain characters.

Good article but it'd be cool if it had a character page while at the same time not giving massive spoilers. At one point, I actually did have a character section, but some people said the article would be better off without one. Maybe sometime I'll make an addendum with one, I think. Also, to give my two cents on this whole situation: Do I think Undertale is the "best game ever"? No, hardly not. Do I think it's very, very good? I do. Much like Barkley Gaiden, it takes a genre that I typically hate for how stagnant, and to be frank, boring it is, and does a lot to make something interesting and new out of it, something I hope a lot more games copy from. True, the hype is starting to die down, but after all that, we're still left with a really good, creative game, and I'd say that's what matters more than anything.
