The article says that Werewolf is difficult without being glitchy or poorly balanced, but I beg to differ – I think the level design is pretty sloppy and things are made difficult because enemies appear from odd and unforeseen places. It also has a general, somewhat unfinished feel. You know like in Shadow Warriors, every enemy is placed so that it makes sense in the overall flow of the stage and you can keep moving forward at a brisk pace while slashing at a steady rhythm (and usually get into trouble if you don’t)? Werewolf lacks that, so that enemies are just kinda thrown at you with little rhyme or reason. You also get powerups by slashing at random walls, with no indication that this should be so, which also seem sloppily implemented.

I actually find the power ups really interesting because rather than it being a few specific walls that can be slashed, it's almost every waist high object in the game world. So it's less a question of getting stuff and more a question of if you want to risk doing so. It also helps the game have much less flicker than NES games with lots of separate layers of "hit this for a power up" sprites throughout the levels like Castlevania I and III or the Ninja Gaiden series, which is good for a really colorful one like Werewolf. While difficult, however, Werewolf can definitely be played smoothly once the backflip is taken advantage of.

I don't agree with the overall positive feel of the article because I found Werewolf to play really poor. However, I never even knew you could use some of the moves described in the article, so maybe the game would have felt more 'playable' if I used those moves (like the backflip).

I think this is correct, I used to stink at the game as a kid but the backflip adds a lot to it. It's definitely an integral part of both the fighting and platforming.

Never knew about this game, it seems cool even if apparently it plays poorly. I remembered having seen that picture of the werewolf holding the flag without knowing about the game, but I thought it was a Satan/demon-type of thing...

I don't know, I always found this game to be pretty awful, myself.
It also did one of the things I find creepiest in video games, turning spoken words into actual physical attack objects (though admittedly, it was a very minor case).

The Japanese version is a lot more playable, IMO. They reversed the jump and attack buttons to make it more like other games; also when you're in human form, the charge attack charges up almost instantly, so it's actually useful (and you're more likely to survive when you get de-powered in the middle of a boss fight). The Japanese game also has a different story, and takes place in outer space.
The backflip is essential to get past lasers and other things.
Anyway it's a pretty rough game, but it's a hell of a better Wolverine game than the one LJN did.
