Sad news. Their reviews were some of the best (and final scores were usually honest).

I liked Pop Fiction but that was already concluded long before this announcement.

I really only remember GameTrailers because of ScrewAttack and the AVGN, who apparently dissociated themselves quite some time ago.

I enjoyed Pixelboy's Mega Man Homepage years ago but it was shut down do to the guys life changing due to his fathers passing. I'd also put Video Game Museum but it has came back in the past year or two.

After that. I'm pretty sure at least through 2010. Because I swear I remember him there when I was in college.

I'm almost positive I remember watching the Street Fighter 2010 review on the Cinemassacre site, which was in early 2010. In fact I would even go as far to say he stopped being Gametrailers exclusive in early 2009, but I could be wrong about that.

Lot of old abandonware sites I used to go are either gone or shadows of their former selfs. HOTU was mentioned earlier, but there's also the very first abandonware site I went to which was really awesome, but which name I cant remember. It had a grey background, very simple design and anyone could upload a game there. Now its gone and I keep kicking myself for not even remembering its name.
Another big one is Abandonia. Its still around, but its well past its heydays. Most of the problems stem from site being sold to a Swedish company and getting an awful re-design to incredibly difficulty of communicating with any of the said designers or webhosts. Everyone who actually provided content for the site, the updaters and reviewers, became passive and slowly stopped bothering putting any effort into the site. I think the final straw was putting ads that beg donations whenever you download something. That made a lot of "Why do I have to pay for download" posts. I spend many years with that site both as a user and a staff member and it made me a cold, bitter man.
I think lot of people want to play the preservation card in order to feel justified for downloading, but for us it was simply because we wanted to play these old games. Obscurities aside, the whole abandonware movement has slowly dimished for the past 8 years or so thanks to GOG. I'm not bitter about it, more like "Our job here is done".
Underground Gamer is another good site now gone. One thing I didn't like about them though was having GOG-downloads, again justfied by being "Preserved".

But, I also think that's about when began working on that ill-advised movie.

That's the only explanation I can think of because I'm pretty positive I did not watch his videos on that site as late as late 2009/early 2010. Also he started pre-production on the movie in 2011 I believe, so 2010 was the end of the "classic" era for AVGN.

But then again it's not like I've been know to be wrong either. Also, yeah I vaguely remember it. But that movie's production was kind of a weird time for me. Because when he announced it, I was pretty stoked. And then time went on and it was released I couldn't care less. Still haven't watched it either.

I finally watched it myself not long ago, it's......watchable, kind of amusing in parts, but definitely not worth the years long wait.

I don't think I've seen anyone mention 1up.com yet? That's another site I kind of wish I spent more time on. I remember them now primarily for the definitive work on the "Worlds of Power" books. www.1up.com/features/8-bit-lit

Thanks Steve. I think you're one of the only people that does. I miss having the passion and drive to work on fansites for little more than a "hey, great site!" comment from time to time. But to quote myself: "You reach a point where you know it's time to pass the torch. I think that's why there's so few original fansite webmasters still running their sites after all these years. You just reach that point where you have to move on, for one reason or another."

You just reach that point where you have to move on, for one reason or another." Mmm, interesting quote. I get what you're saying. It's definitely nice to get the odd random compliment here and there. As a webmaster myself, I recently had to end my original site due to forces outside of my control. I did recently launch a Wordpress as sort of a version 2. But I haven't been writing anything basically for four months until the Wordpress launch a few weeks ago. The past four months I joined a gym and entered a relationship. Being free of "web mastering," I had a lot more free time to do other things. I hope to strike a better balance going forward. Being a webmaster, like this hobby of video games, should be done for fun on the side. I think it's possible to strike that balance but I respect anyone who "leaves the game" for their reasons. Sometimes life just takes us in a different direction.
