I like SHOGO a lot too but LithTech also gave us KISS: Psycho Circus, Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza, Gods and Generals, Codename Nina: Global Terrorism Strike Force/Nina: Agent Chronicles, etc. What r u talking, man? KISS Psycho Circus is incredible! One of best late 90s fps.

I think you'll appreciate how the first level is the funeral home/cemetery from Phantasm. There are a boatload of references to everything from It Lives to The Shining (maze with Torrance's frozen corpse), from Poe to Evil Dead, from the Return of the Living Dead series to Jaws and Star Wars, and even to the Simpsons with lines such as "Hugh Jass" and "Fresh victims for my ever-growing army of the undead!".

This article does not lie, Blood is fucking awesome, I mean holy crap. This is hands down the best FPS of this era and tech I've ever played, it reminds me of why I fell in love with the No One Lives Forever games so much because Blood has that same sense of pure, unadulterated fun, I mean that carnival level, wow. The action in the game is super intense and chaotic, it actually reminds me a lot of Serious Sam (which given that game was obviously a homage to this era of FPS makes sense), at first I thought the game was a little too tough on the default difficulty, so I bumped it down a notch, but then I was thought that was too easy, I so went back to the default difficulty and after giving it a chance the difficulty is just right, the game is tough but not in frustrating way, I actually love how there are moments so intense you're pretty much just running around and shooting at random, hoping for the best. Thanks for this article, the game was on my radar but not super high on my to play list prior to reading this article, this is exactly why I love HG101. Man, I really wish we could have the Monolith of Blood and NOLF 1&2 back somehow.

Nice article. I have to admit though- I kinda liked Blood 2 when it was new. Ok, I was young, but really.. it was gory, funny and the graphics weren't to bad at the time.

Blood II came out when I was 13, and being a German guy, there's always something doubly special about playing games not meant for your age, even moreso when they are banned from open sale in your country. So unsurprisingly I did enjoy the game for what it was worth (and I'll always fondly remember the corpse in the running launderette), at least the first few hours. When I finished it years later, I was of course a more experienced gamer, which quickly put things into perspective.

I think Blood 2's first mistake is ditching the 1920's setting for a stereotypical dystopian future.
The 1920's setting is one of the things that sets the original Blood apart the most from other shooters of the era, it's also perfect for the HP Lovecraft vibe the game goes for, ditching that for the future is just stupid.

Duke 3D used to be on Gog.com but it was removed from their catalog along with every other Duke Nukem game on December 31. IIRC Gog stated that they were in talks with the new rightholders to bring the games back online but it's unknown when and if that will going to happen.

Man, I really wish we could have the Monolith of Blood and NOLF 1&2 back somehow. ...and TRON 2.0. Well, I was told that 3DRealms devs were behind the original Blood, not Monolith so much. If it's true, Blood was never really Monolith's baby. It would also explain why the original is so much fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously -- 3dRealms was notorious for that. You can also find Duke's corpse over the chapel altar in one of the expansions -- Cryptic Passage I believe. I took a screenshot of him, but looks like it didn't make it into the article.

He's in the carnival level, behind the freak show. I just realized, you meant past the freakshow, behind the tightrope snake pit. Couldn't find him for ages. Aheheh.
