Maybe it will be next? Blazing Star isn't really a sequel, it's more of a spiritual successor.

Um... there's actually a link to the Blazing Star article in the Pulstar article. (And it's dated August 21, 2015, for some reason.) Also, the link to the Shmuplations/Neo Geo Freak interview is broken. It has an extra set of quotation marks at the end.

Aicom's ViewPoint almost got a sequel developed by Racdym / Raijin titled ViewPoint 2064. The prototype is in someone's hands, but hasn't been dumped yet.
As for Pulstar, other similar R-TYPE games are:
RAYXANBER trilogy Last Resort Rezon Xexex / Orius And a handful of Irem's own (e.g. X-Multiply, Gallop, etc.)
I also noticed that there are 3 versions of the game's soundtrack: MVS/AES, prototype, and NGCD.

I liked the mash/charge mechanic used in this and Blazing Star, but I won't lie: it made me appreciate autofire controls.
