So riddle me this: Everybody claims Trump is the worst. But when it comes to invading other countries for oil and profit (Venezuela being next) he's got support from all over the "free" world, politicians and press alike (surprise, surprise...).

So riddle me this: Everybody claims Trump is the worst. But when it comes to invading other countries for oil and profit (Venezuela being next) he's got support from all over the "free" world, politicians and press alike (surprise, surprise...). Venezuela is a dystopian nightmare where people are literally starving. Regardless of how noble his intentions truly are, Trump is preventing a destabilization of the continent. Brazil and Colombia are already struggling to take in the influx of refugees from that country. Also, America doesn't need foreign oil anymore. If anything, they should reward the Venezuelan regime for dismantling their oil industry. Unfortunately, the Bush administration has damaged US reputation for the remainder of the century. The "oil" argument has become a dogma among many left-wing circles despite the many legitimate reasons to criticize US foreign policy.

If the Bush administration hurt our reputation for the remainder of the century, how badly is Trump compounding the damage? D:

Even if you believed every single one of those talking points the glorified PR-industry ("News") claims to be true (please don't): When has US-backed regime-change ever made the world a better place? Trump preventing "destabilization"? Destabilization is what US forces have done for ages all over the world, including South America. Why would it be any different this time? Do you believe in "humanitarian aid" in "freeing the people"? You can't do that by destroying land and killing people, you know? Those things are diametrically opposed. The latter is what has happened over and over and over in recent history. And it always begins with some fabricated story to emotionally paralyze the common people, so they don't realize that even if those stories were true (turns out they never are), it still would not justify the horrible crimes commited by the US/NATO military. It's the oldest trick in the book (that book would be called "Propaganda" by Edward Bernays, btw).
Imagine you were the one living in any of those countries invaded by the US-military. Imagine your family being killed, your home town bombed to ashes. Would you still think it would be worth it to prevent "destabilization"? In the case of Venezuela, oil is certainly a big factor (Trump advisor John Bolton has admitted to wanting US companies to take over the Venezuelan oil market himself in a TV interview. This is someone who, among other things, lied to the public to help destroy Irak under G.W. Bush, mind you). But sure, wars/ invasions are not only about oil - they're also about other resources, dominance, control over a region and just making money (war is *very* lucrative just by itself for certain people), among other things. And no, it was not just the Bush administration, it also was the other Bush administration, Clinton, Obama, Reagan, Nixon ... you name them - war criminal after war criminal - that have helped to damage the reputation of USA governments over decades. Also: Call me "left-wing", if you absolutely must. But I find abstract terms like "right"/"left" to be pretty useless when talking about politics. They don't have much meaning nowadays (if they ever had), because they are used to decribe so many vastly different ideas and people. Instead I prefer to talk about what people specifically believe in, what they actually stand for. I believe in basic human rights for every single person on the planet, for example.

The Venezuela situation is complex but I don't think that a military response is going to do anything but create another enemy.

Sadly the USA have by far the most powerful military worldwide with bases all over the world. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute they spent 610 billion Dollars on the military in 2017, which is more than the next seven biggest spenders combined and 40% globally ( visuals.sipri.org/). That's insane and I fear it will give the people in command even more reason for arrogance. It also shows how lucrative it is to keep the war machine going. So I doubt they will care much about an enemy more.
The peace movement is needed more than ever.
edit: Also what many don't realize is that the so-called "sanctions" imposed on Venezuela are in fact a war crime (siege warfare). So the war on Venezuela has started already and my heart goes out to everybody living there.

Good thing freedom of the press exists, right?: It's a sad, sad world we live in. Pretty scary how powerful and corrupt the US military and intelligence agencies are.
