I still haven't seen Resurrection. You aren't missing much. As always, those things are debatable Personally, I can enjoy it for the most part. I like the director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet ( Delicatessen is so good). One thing that all his movies have in common is that they all are visually very inventive and interesting and so is Resurrection. The story is okay, it certainly has it's moments, but sometimes the dialogue is a little too "Whedon-esque" (meaning it tends to lack subtlety) for me, even though Whedon has distanced himself from the movie. I also like that the movie, instead of copying previous entries, does it's own thing; sometimes it feels more like a dark comedy. It does not always work, but when it does, it is quite fun. And, to shock everyone, I like Alien 3 even more - even the theatrical cut! Like Resurrection, it has a very distinctive look. And the soundtrack is phenomenal! I also enjoy how intimate it feels sometimes. Most of the characters are pretty great, like Charles Dance's Clemens or Charles Dutton's Dillon and Sigourney Weaver as Ripley is excellent as always. Killing the other survivors from Aliens was pretty drastic, but it fit the story and tone. Usually I dislike killing important characters just to get a cheap emotional response (e.g. Gwen Stacey), but in this case it did not feel too forced to me nor did I feel it was done for pure shock value. To me Alien 3 is about finding purpose and redemption in an ultimately hopeless situation. And in that regard the deaths of Newt and Hicks work, because both used to represented hope - for both, Ripley and the viewer. And their fates foreshadow what is to come, or rather what is not: a happy ending. Well, if you don't count a martyr's death. I'm not a religious person, but I find the strong religious themes fascinating in this one. In summary, I like all (main) Alien movies (not counting Prometheus or AvP).

I think that the soundtrack to Alien 3 deserves the praise it gets. Especially the theme that plays when Ripley sacrifices herself.

Alien 3 definitely gets more shot than it deserves. It's got some good acting. Fincher's set visuals are always good. The cgi Aliens always bother me though. Losing the two characters at the beginning is essential to that story. And given the behind the scenes problems, it's amazing that we actually got a coherent movie out of it. It's just not a great movie compared to the first two. If you take Ripley and the Alien out and replace them with original characters you've got a decent thriller.
