Still need this game. Return of Egypt was a personal favourite of mine back in the early 2000s when I discovered the joy of Japanese freeware games. When Degica released a trailer for Pharaoh Rebirth with a certain familiar theme tune, I was, unsurprisingly, immediately hooked. Btw., the linear progression system with replaying older stages in order to find branching paths reminds me of another Egypt-themed game: Lobotomy's Powerslave. I wonder if we'll ever see an article on that game ?

Oh, it's the game I've played this weekend! And yes, it's quite excellent. That said, I remember seeing Return of Egypt on the Underdogs site but I've never played it, or at least I don't remember trying it. Also, thanks to Krobon for having taught me that ancient Egyptians worshipped Pacman ghosts. Btw., the linear progression system with replaying older stages in order to find branching paths reminds me of another Egypt-themed game: Lobotomy's Powerslave. I wonder if we'll ever see an article on that game ? Seconded. Powerslave was awesome.

Great game indeed and one of the best Metroidvania games. I reached the final boss where I lost. Do I need to collect all treasures from previous stages to unlock stuff like good ending, true final boss or anything like that?

There's a bonus level with the "true" final boss that unlocks after beating the game and finding a specific item.

There's also a much harder to find ultimate secret boss. It's in fact in the screenshot above : people say that finding almost everything will open the wall to the left. In my case, it opened after i found a certain item only findable after finishing the game
Good luck finding that boss, he's LEAGUE ahead from all the rest of the game in term of difficulty. He's also rather interesting to fight count taken to what he is...

Indie gaming blog Warp Door (which has some people of Indiegames behind) proclaimed the original Japanese version "the best indie game nobody has played" of 2015 - it's thanks to that post I discovered and played it, and even without knowing the exact story (although I recognized the links to Return of Egypt), it was a blast, except the jeep level. I just purchased the Plus version on Steam.
By the way, Jonathan and Andre are humanoid animals because of *another* curse they got in the past. I've seen the dialogue in a gameplay video, Andre even shouts "another cuuuurse"...

I find it quite hilarious that Andre has been turned specifically into an alligator snapping turtle.

I only knew about it because the guys at Steam decided to spoil it by putting an image of the fight among the pictures in the game's Steam shop page . They also spoiled the appearance of the bonus level's final boss. Are they assholes or just stupid? By the way, the thing that amazes me the most is how Krobon is a 3D modeler by trade, yet he's so good at making a 2D game in all its components. Now I want to track his games of the "Mogura" series!
I knew but I decided not to write it because it's not really important to the plot. Krobon himself said he was inspired by Porco Rosso for how two humanoid animals live among the humans without an apparent reason! Also, if you complete the bonus level exclusive to the Steam version, at the end of the end credits you can see for a brief time Jonathan's real human face (spoiler: it's not really worth it ).

This game looks great, will probably get it later as almost everyone says good things about it.
Hell the only time i saw someone talking badly was when i randomly saw a video of one of the Cinemassacre guys playing this game and he was complaining all the time, but it really looked like it was a guy who wasn't willing to give the game a chance and one of those retro gamers that look for faults in everything new, i dunno, it still looked good even though the guy spent the whole video hating almost everything.

I always had a soft spot for James and Mike specifically because they're not particularly intellectual, and don't make any pretences about it. It can make for the odd frustrating watch every now and then, though .

it was a blast, except the jeep level Oh God! I hate the jeep level. It made me rage so much that I wanted to throw the controller at the screen. Why they make the racing stages at most platform/action games so irritating? The difficulty of the rest of the game is all right.

There never was an English version of Return of Egypt, was there? I tried playing that once, but gave up pretty quickly when the language barrier looked like it would be insurmountable. In any case, there's no point in linking to www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/game.php?id=4810 for a download, since instead of a download link, all it has is a Google search link. (The past is gone.)
