"And mayo. Motoko-Chan will slather anything in mayo. In fact, it loses any semblance of self-control the moment mayo enters the picture (which it will inevitably will).".>which it inevitably will?
Fascinating read.

From what I remember reading in EGM, the game was solely released as a raffle prize (10k copies, if I recall). I got a copy, but that was because it seems its one of the not-for-sale ("hibaihin"?) rare games nobody really cares about, even in Japan.

So it's just another useless advergame, I wonder if there ever was a good one. And what's up with the viruses from Dr. Mario (Dr. Mayo?) in one picture?

I have a near mint copy of Motoko-Chan. Yep, it is designed to sell Ajinomoto mayonnaise, but that's obvious before playing. The box is simply covered with the Ajinomoto logo/mayo bottle.
When it comes to games connected to a food product, Motoko-Chan wins hands down. Nice graphics, cheerful, and it even has decent music.
Motoko-Chan is a extremely short game. Maybe a hour at most. It's also rather inexpensive. A very nice, complete copy goes for $50 including shipping.
Lastly, Motoko-Chan is one of the first, if not the first, cooking game. So, a nice little game for a SFC collection.
Late edit: Although you can muddle through Motoko-Chan without understanding Japanese, a moderate grasp is necessary to understand everything.

It honestly depends on what you consider "cooking" - if we're a bit more loose with the definition, stuff like Short Order/Eggsplode! on NES or Pressure Cooker for 2600 certainly predate it.

Very true. However, Motoko-chan is by far the closest to what gamers consider to be a "cooking game". A bit like Cooking Mama before there was one.
