Yesterday from the day this post was first posted Star Trek was released on television 50 years ago and history was made. I never really sat down in the past to watch repeats of the original series but BBC America is showing a marathon or something of the show. I'm hoping that they start showing the show more often so I can do some catch up.

Can we keep Star Trek but move the trekkies somewhere else
I have hopes for that new announced series. I just hope the writers aren't terrible.

I saw that documentary Trekkies once when I was young and it definitely freaked me out how bizarre some of those people were. Especially considering the big obsession was over a fun but pretty cheesy old TV show, in the pantheon of pop culture Star Trek is fine but there's way cooler stuff out there, the obsession seems a little disproportionate to me but I guess you had to be there in the 60's and 70's to really get it.

I started watching the original series a while back, nearly finished it now, but I was really surprised how well it holds up. Sure, it's campy, they keep reusing like these western sets out of cheapness and the pacing is a little slow for today's standards, but the stories are mostly still very entertaining. Hopefully I'll have the patience to sit through the entire extended Star Trek franchise eventually.

The Original Series is very hit and miss. Some episodes I think are brilliant, while others I couldn't even finish watching because they were so terrible. I tried to watch The Next Generation, but most of the episodes in the first season I couldn't finish. I've heard it gets better in late seasons, and it probably does. I intend to get back into it someday, but I dunno when that'll be.

I advise even non-Trekkies to see Wrath of Khan at least once. Is not just good Trek movie but good movie period.

The only exposure I have to Star Trek is watching the movies. I don't think it's much for me, because most of them didn't do very much for me. Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, and the Reboot are the only ones I didn't find boring.

I remember catching glimpses of The Next Generation when I was really little and finding it exciting since hey, spaceships! Later when G4 used to play reruns ten years back I saw a handful of Next Generation episodes, I'm afraid that's about it though as far as my experience with the tv series go.
I have seen some of the movies, including The Voyage Home and the 2009 reboot, which I enjoyed but Into Darkness was so awful I didn't even bother with Beyond even though I heard it was way better.
One of these days I would like to watch the entirety of The Next Generation though.

Next Gen is good, but the first 2 seasons are rough (but not without some good episodes sprinkled in). It doesn't help that some of the episodes are recycled from the Phase 2 project. It starts getting better around Season 3.

I am optimistic about the new series, too. Let's hope they don't screw up. I agree. On the other hand Beyond is very good. I advise even non-Trekkies to see Wrath of Khan at least once. Is not just good Trek movie but good movie period. It's so good that, in fact, introduced me to the whole franchise. I tried to watch The Next Generation, but most of the episodes in the first season I couldn't finish. I've heard it gets better in late seasons, and it probably does. I intend to get back into it someday, but I dunno when that'll be. Start with season 2. It's still a bit rough around the edges but the writing and the characters improve a lot. It also helps that the second season is graced by classic episodes such as "Q Who" and the absolute masterpiece that is "The Measure Of A Man". The point the show really kicks into high gear, though, is the ending of the third season.

I advise even non-Trekkies to see Wrath of Khan at least once. Is not just good Trek movie but good movie period. I actually really hated Wrath of Khan. I never liked the episode Space Seed, so seeing a continuation of that plot was very unenjoyable, and everything in the movie's plot felt painfully contrived to me. Into Darkness was so awful I didn't even bother with Beyond even though I heard it was way better. Really? I haven't seen the new Star Trek movie yet, but I thought Into Darkness was a lot of fun. I preferred it over Wrath of Khan, at any rate. Will do When I try it again, I'll just skip straight to Season 2. No more point in fumbling around in Season 1.

I'm not a Trekkie, but I probably watched more Next Generation episodes than I even intended to. They used to air it weekdays at 5:00pm or 6:00pm right after school so I pretty much sat and watched it because I had nothing else to do. It's not like I had an active game console in those years either. Unless you count Atari 2600 with my 3 games library.
