I'm not talking about ripping off riffs or melodies, I'm talking about style. (I know of the thread on the other subject in the music sub. Plus nobody ever posts there, sadly.)
The #1 song as far that is concerned is the opening of this:
This sounds like it's straight out of Mega Man IMO. And yeah, it uses the same chord progression as a lot of Mega Man tunes (I VI VII I), but it's not just that. The tempo also matches, and even the guitar crunch sounds like it could be from an arrange album of X. Plus it kicks ass.
Then there's the whole subgenre of Nintendocore:
Anything else? Obviously a ton of 80s heavy rock sounds like Thunder Force IV, but that's more the other way around, i.e. Technosoft ripping that style off. But hey, if your association to Dokken is "this sounds like Thunderforce 4's intro!", by all means, post it too. This thread is most likely gonna be association-heavy anyway, so feel free to contribute whatever triggers memories =)

Two of my favourite albums are very, very gamey in nature. Here's the Hungarian prog/industrial/death metal band Gire's eponymous first and only album. It sounds so much like a shoot 'em up soundtrack that I actually had words with band leader Tamás Kátai (better known for his follow-up solo project Thy Catafalque) about using their stuff in a game project I used to work on. While said project has changed significantly, and is now shelved for the time being, I still can't recommend this stuff enough. The full album can be streamed and downloaded via Bandcamp. And then there's this here gloriously cheesy specimen, British proggy black-ish metal weirdos Lychgate's second album An Antidote for the Glass Pill, which can be pretty much summed up as " Super Castlevania IV: The Inofficial Metal Opera". That's really all you need to know. Just listen. Again, the full album is available on Bandcamp.

I always thought that old-school progressive trance or psytrance sounds really similar to the energetic electronic soundtracks you'll find on mid ninties racing games on DOS or PS1.. or some mid ninties shmups on DOS.

You will find plenty of this by looking at the artists that had a major influence on video game music, especially those that used synthesizers in the 70s/80s.
Rain Forest Rap Session by Jean Michel Jarre, released in 1972. This wouldn't feel out of place in a Mega Drive game.

First thought that comes to mind for me is sasakure.UK: a guy who got his start as a Vocaloid artist, but who later went on to release a LOT of albums, featuring a LOT of different vocalists (and, yes, still some Vocaloids as well!). I really like his stuff, personally -- it has a distinctly Japanese, experimental, kind of hipster charm to it.
His most well-known song is definitely Hello Planet:
Though from the same album, there's also this prequel (it's a concept album that tells a story):
And for a great example of his non-Vocaloid work, here's an awesome song of his based on 2001: A Space Odyssey from one of his collaboration projects:
And another great song featuring the same vocalist, "lasah," whose voice I really like (and this song sounds particularly video game-y IMHO):

Oh yes..I personally love the early german electronic experiments, and there is a lot from the early 1970ies that sounds like a vidogame from the late 80ies/early 90ies..

Well, hardly surprising, considering that many games had licensed tracks from that very scene, as well as other EDM artists.

What I mainly think of when I think about "racing games with licensed dance music", i think about Wipeout, which has more breakbeat-dub style stuff from Prodigy and so on, than full on psytrance. When I think of games with psy-trance-like OST, Ridge Racer comes directly to mind, but that was not licensed music. A quick google search brought up Gran Tourismo 4. Wow. Honestly, I did not know that, but X-Dream is very fitting for a racing game. So, do you have any more examples? WOuld be highly appreciated, I find this connection very fascinating.

While Tilt's Twelve be cool too.

That Cluster song is an exellent example. A lot of electronic music from the 70's gives off an 80's/early 90's arcade feeling. Or Mega Drive feeling.
I also have gotten a decent amount of comments from people when I'm listening to Zappa that it sounds like I'm listening to something from a video game.

This always reminded me of the kind of music you'd hear in a laid-back puzzle game, like a DROD or something.

Do the Game Music Prayer albums count? Most are original creations.
