Was that ever really true or just a myth? You can totally buy used underwear, Tom Green did so in a special once where he went to Japan, I think he bought them at a sex shop, but as far as buying them from an actual "vending machine"? I'm not so sure. Even if it did happen it was probably like a one time thing, hardly something you'd find commonly which is what some people seem to think, the idea is completely hilarious though. For what it's worth, Snopes says it's true, adding that they've become even rarer but still exist. About that "piss" stuff, I saw something similar once but related to young boys instead of young girls. It was quite creepy. A very weird stuff I read (don't know if actually true or just exaggerated) is that an otaku destroyed his entire collection of a manga just because it was hinted that the main girl character might have had a relationship with a man. I will never understand this obsession for the purity of fictional characters...

I saw this today and I can't stop laughing:
Basically a producer of erotic video had these talking garbage boxes made: whenever someone puts stuff into them, they are greeted by sound clips coming from several porn stars thanking them. The more the boxes are filled (huh huh, "filled"), the lewder the comments become, or so it seems. Obviously (because this is Japan after all) they have a different "personality" whether they are for combustible trash, non combustible or cans/glass bottles, with the first one being more aggressive.

They were dead wrong.

Once I had a house warming party where we watch House, House 2: The Second Story, and Hausu. It was awesome.
I also think the used panties in a vending machine might have been a one time novelty or a vending machine in a sex shop. It is certainly one of the urban myths blown way out of proportion.
At this point I have seen so much weird shit from Japan I can't even say. It rarely even shocks me even if it still manages to amuse me.

Did they know like a single thing about Japan? All that was before my time but I have heard that there was xenophobia towards Japan in the US during the 80s and early 90s and it sounds so fucking typical of the country that elected Trump, xenophobia is as American as apple pie.

Basically Japan was in the middle of their economic bubble and companies were flush with cash, so they started buying properties and companies in the US, which drove people crazy. There were fears that Japan was "taking over", which you can see in Blade Runner or Shadowrun in how they portrayed the future. And yeah, the main argument the xenophobes used was that the Japanese were incapable of creating anything, that they could only imitate and make miniature version of US inventions. It sounds crazy because it is.

Some of the things that get the anthropomorphic treatment is pretty weird, like swords or entire countries... That little yellow toy that leaks stuff when you squeeze it was pretty strange. Someone on here was using it as an avatar a while back. Gudetama? He's an egg-man, but not Eggman. My wife likes him and it totally grosses me out.

I will never understand this obsession for the purity of fictional characters... I remember that otaku outcry. It was about Nagi from Kannagi.

That always made no sense to me. You're never going to be able to date, let alone fuck, these idols. What the hell does it matter? It's the same over here, too. Disney and teen stars are treated as though they're exemplars for the entire generation, rather than just being human kids.

It sounds crazy because it is. I think they even made a film about these tensions (I did not watch it as of now): I have read somewhere (I wish I remember where, since it was interesting) that this system of keeping the idols "pure and innocent" but at the same time upping the sexual innuendos is taking a toll on some of them, not to speak of the more rabid fans that sometimes actually became violent and dangerous. Yes, as you said it happens in the West as well, but not to the same extent since "idol culture" is a quite different thing in Japan. I was never impressed with it, mostly because of these incidents, but now I'd like to know a little more about it, to understand what's behind it. And yes, I think it's stupid and forced not letting these teenage girls have a romantic or sexual life at all. Interestingly, the manager of the female idol group Necronomidol (yup, that's a thing, they're not bad) said that he won't put any limits on the private lives of his young artists... but guess what? He's a Western person! Guess girls who want to become famous in the idol group will have to deal with this kind of stuff for a long time...
