www.hardcoregaming101.net/malditacastilla/malditacastilla.htmLocomalito's homage to Ghosts n' Goblins goes commercial with an EX edition, released on consoles and computers, that includes some new levels and other enhancements that make it worth your cash. Incidentally, even though Locomalito's games have previously been freeware, I ended up donating money for his new releases, because they are easily worth it (though I still need to get around to playing Curse of Issyos).

If you want to be more specific regarding the OST, I'm pretty sure it uses 2x the YM2203 chip, just like Black Tiger did. This going by how it sounds and the composer's comment on the soundtrack's own homepage: "Since the original pair of chip provides 6 channels with monoaural sound in game, I have produced the sound with full stereo enhancement process for your pleasure. "
Meaning he added stereo to the OST release, the in-game one is in mono.
As for the game, I tried the demo just now and made it to lvl 5 before calling it a day. It's pretty cool, and feels super authentic to early G&G (I believe it is also inspired by Willow), but it's a little too hard for me.

I played the original version way back in Dec. 2012, it's a great game! Not sure about buying this enhanced version, but someday I'll give Locomalito money since everything I played from them was pretty good, including mini-games like Viriax or Gaurodan. Their (his?) first major game Hydorah is excellent as well, but too hard for my tastes. GnG have the most blatant references, but there are others too like Gradius (ring-spitting stone faces) and their own games, including Hydorah and L'Abbaye des Morts.
About Curse of Issyos, well... it was a very early project that they recovered years later, and it shows: it's like a more boring and repetitive version of Battle Of Olympus. It's nice, but not sure if I want to recommend it.

It is nice to see someone doing arcade inspired games as well, especially since that is where most of the innovation and quality was back in the eighties/early nineties.

Glad someone made a article about this. I was curious about the game since seeing it on steam.

As a longtime fan of Locomalito's games, I bought Maldita Castilla Ex immediately when it appeared on the Steam store. I felt like he deserved my money after having spent many hours enjoying his games for free and the Ex version offers enough new features to justify the purchase.
Also, the fight against Don Quixote in a burning library is a nice nod to the Cervantes masterpiece: at a certain point of Don Quixote the main character is unconscious in his bed and two of his friends, a barber and a priest, discuss whether they should burn all his collection of chivalric novels and the priest concludes that some books should be saved. And one of the book spared from the flames is the Amadis of Gaul, which in the game is one of the secret objectives.

I felt it could have been a bit harder, the only really challenging parts aside from finding everything were the last couple bosses. Still an excellent game though, and I didn't even know about the update, getting that now.
