I'd love to play this again. I have a Gaiares cart that doesn't work. Cleaned the contacts, opened it up, examined it, everything looks fine. Can't figure out what's wrong with it.

Wow, coulda sworn that there was already a Gaiares article on the site. I need to get better at this game I've only made it to level two. Then again I really haven't spent enough time with it.

I wonder if anybody's ever tried tracking down Jamie Bunker (aka "That Loser From the Gaiares Ad")

Interesting, is the JP version easier then? "Perhaps it's because the characters are reviving the Earth, so that's why English players thought the "res" stood for "rescue", as opposed to "less"." Could be, yeah.

I always thought Gaiares' soundtrack was vastly Underestimated. A very melancolic work with the typical Telenet drum sounds. Also, the cinematics were really great, in execution as in concept (a SHMUP with a well-developped story remains a rare thing).

I don't play shmups much but the cutscenes make me want to check this one out. I'm a sucker for 16-bit era anime-styled intros. Curious about the music, too.
And I didn't realize until now that fear of the rental market was a major reason why Western-made (or published) action games tended to be so hard. Or maybe I read something like that long ago and forgot.

Very interesting and well-researched article on a game that I didn't really know, now I want to try it. To tell the truth, though, I came here to post this hilarious parody of Gaiares' ads made recently as an ad for the forthcoming Italian indie shmup Xydonia, that promises a return to the golden age of 80s and 90s horizontal shooters:

Stealing weapons from enemies? Sounds similar to Blazeon.

Shmup gamer porn star reject Tony Stark?
(Gaiares definitely had an underated soundtrack. Could have used more love from the remix community).

Unfortunately it's one of the hardest for the 16-bit consoles and you can't lower the difficulty, only raise it. Without GG codes that is.
