A bit of a bumpy ride. For myself: Not too bad overall. Not the greatest, either.
As I'm posting this, EST (New York) is about half away from the midnight countdown. I stayed in because I'm a big party pooper and not really feeling up for a drunken crowd.
I hope everyone is looking at the coming year with an optimistic eye.
Stay safe!

Luckily for me 2016 has been ok for me personally and it's also gone by quickly, but there's no denying that the never ending dirge of depressing news stories and celebrity deaths has been a real downer.
Despite everything I'm still optimistic for 2017, I'll always be hoping that the next year will be better because if you don't have hope you truly have nothing.

Every year is just as shitty for me as the last, as far as I'm concerned. Yay for being a depressed sex-addict who can't get out of the house and thus can't really do anything fun?

Me, 2016 had a lot of downs especially within and outside of gaming, especially that of Konami and SNK (not counting the success of KOF XIV, that's a sort of plus regarding their return to gaming despite my concerns outside of KOF) and of the election...um antics. At least I got to experience Kirby Planet Robobot, Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Moana, entertainment wise; those two are going to be my highlights.
Edit: Oh and I should note that I haven't been playing games very often due to me lacking an AV to HDMI input device for an HD tv.

This year has been terrible, but I think we do need a shake-up every once in a while. And with that I mean a reminder that things have to change to stop the worst of the worst.
Gaming-wise I enjoyed what little I had time to play.

Do you think 2016 is actually going to stick around in people's memory as an infamously terrible year or is it doomed to fade into obscurity like almost every other year from the 21st century so far?
It'd be interesting if in 70 years or whatever someone made a period piece about the year, sorta like that movie 1918.

You're not the only one. I decided to get a start on changing my life for the new year. Instead of partying, I was studying software design and systematically cleaning my shamefully filthy apartment. breaking out of a shell can be tough, especially when depression has set in for a long time. I guess I'm lucky in that I'm much more outgoing than most of my fellow gaming people. Really, I just started with small habits to improve my situation, basically just bossing myself around about small, very doable tasks - "You see the garbage is full? Take it out!" and other small things like picking up empties or dirty dishes from my desk when I take a break from the desk. Just little things that have picked up momentum over the past week. Now I'm doing light calisthenics and stretches periodically, I'm sober on new year's morning, and my apartment is more habitable than it's been in a long time. I hope that 2017 is good for you and everyone on this here forum. Salut.

I can't see people forgetting the year Donald Chump was elected xD I hope I'm dead by the time movies about 2016 hit theaters. I don't want to discuss politics in this post and I don't want to imply people's ideas are wrong, but this kind of movies tend to be very benign when portraying the role of one direction of the political spectrum. Not saying everyone is like that (I don't believe that for a second), but the people in the arts industry tend to be. Couple that with the average Joe's tendency to picture time eras according to movies, TV and fiction books...

The worst part about 2016 isn't so much what happened as what it could lead to. If the situation deteriorates as much as many expect it to, then 2016 will look quaint by comparison. Also, robots will take all our jobs before long (those that haven't been automated out of existence already, anyway) and the rich and powerful who run this shit will probably be too stupid to replace a completely archaic economic system that serves fewer and fewer people with something that allows a better distribution of ressources. Of course maybe I'm wrong and shit will be all sunshine and brotherly love, but I don't really see how. If anything, try to get as much out of life now as you can, cause who knows what could happen, anyway? And maybe it won't be that bad. As far as the celebrity deaths, some of them weren't so young, and others had long history of drug use, so while it might be sad, it's no really that surprising or unusual. I imagine being a rock fan in the 70s would have been way worse, if you think of much drugs they did.

I don't think you can really predict how people are going to look at previous years until quite a bit down the road. For one thing, we don't know what's going to happen in the next few years. Either way, with populist politicians gaining ground pretty much everywhere in Europe and especially in the US (even though Trump actually lost the election), I can't say that policitally/globally this has been a great year, but at the same time, I live very comfortable, I'm a while male, and I'm not actively doing anything against this development (well, I'm gonna vote in March), so I don't feel like I'm really entitled to bitch about it too much. I don't really care anyway, since me as one person can't really do anything about anything unless I put in a hell of a lot of effort. Might as well sit back and enjoy my own life. For me, 2016 has been one of the best years ever. I moved out, got my drivers license (and went on a roadtrip through multiple countries only weeks after getting it) and I finally got started at university. So, this has been a year full of milestones. For the first time I feel like I actually accompished something with my life. At any rate, hope you guys keep all your fingers this year. You can hardly be a hardcore gamer without them...

My 2016 was pretty relaxed for the most part, though more income is a plus. A few headaches with the girlfriend, since she is not video game friendly. At all. She wants me to sell my FF XV Ultimate Edition, so it's sitting in the bedroom, unopened. A rat chewed through my car's wiring harness, on a "cold" Los Angeles winter night, so it's in the shop for repair and replacement parts. Ate a lot less hamburgers this year. Got to see the Grand Canyon after all these years.
2016 was definitely an interesting year. Promising for Syria since it looks like it's one step closer to peace. Bad for Yemen since no one seems to care that Saudi Arabia is bombing the shit out of them with our country's support. Brexit, good for Britain for not having to continue paying money out to the EU for laws and policies that they have no vote and no say over. And the election itself is definitely dramatic movie fodder. Bernie got the nomination stolen from him, and those in the DNC who had decisive evidence all die or get killed under mysterious circumstances. The news predicted Trump would fail, that he would never even get to the Republican nomination to begin with. What's even more crazy is that career Republicans, all the major news networks, Hollywood, Facebook/Google/Twitter algorithms were all anti-Trump; while Hillary's $1.3 BILLION DOLLARS campaign could not seal the deal. But as Hunter X Hunter Ging Freecs would say, you would need to know how to play in a vote-gathering game. Since the only state Hillary won dominantly was the state of California, which includes all the popular votes; essentially the 3 million that put her over Trump. She probably would have had a better chance if she actually campaigned for every state. At least a positive thing, everyone will pay less in taxes with the new administration (no income tax if you earn less than $25,000 per year).
The Cavs made a comeback, the Cubs finally won the World Series. Nico Rosberg beat out Lewis Hamilton in F1, then retired. Game of Thrones is building up. Enjoying watching the trio of Jeremy Clarkson, John Hammond, and James May, back in The Grand Tour, as well as seeing new faces on Top Gear.

I don't know how the Brexit is gonna play out for Britian, but I have to say that I find putting such an important decision in the hands of the common people extremely stupid. It's true that it might've happened anyway, and I'm not saying that policitians always know best, but at least they are a bit qualified to think about this kinda shit.
Reminds me of something this year that actually got me quite worked up. There was this referendum in the Netherlands about some deal with Ukrain. Basically, our Prime minister was gonna sign it, but then some jackasses thought this of all things was worth calling a referendum over. So, they got enough people to sign their cause and they got a referendum, basically asking if the Netherlands should sign this. So in the end we got:
1. Only a very slight majority of voters who voted against signing. 2. A lot of people only ended up voting or not voting for strategic reasons (at least 30% of 18+ people had to come and vote) 3. A referendum about a topic nobody knows shit about. Even after reading up on it, most people admitted they could not properly decide. 4. This deal was going to be signed by every country involved (quite a few, about 15 I think), but the people behind the referendum still thought it was worth it to call it. And lastly, 5. A referendum that was only going to be an advisory one. It's not like Brexit where the result is what's going to happen.
So, our Prime minister, understandably still decided to sign it. I mean, look at how unconvincing this whole thing was. And people are still bitching about it half a year later. Politicians won't shut up about how this makes our political system totally fake, and the people behind the referendum are so fucking pround of themselves (even though literally everyone else in the Netherlands thinks this was a total failure), that it spawned no less that THREE seperate new political parties.
I hardly get real worked up over politics but this BS has been going on for half a year now.

I too fear what 2016 could lead to. 2017 could just be the even worse sequel to 2016.
I am going to flip off 2016 just before midnight in my time zone.

This is my fear, but I can't help but be an optimist because here's the thing, the future's hard to predict, you may think something seems guaranteed only to be surprised. I'm not expecting 2017 to be amazing, but what I am hoping is that it will become clear that we're gonna be ok, we've living in genuinely uncertain times at the moment, easily the most uncertain since after the Great Recession and 9/11, but my hope is that like those instances life will go on, that this isn't the prologue to some post-apocalyptic movie or whatever.

Honestly, the only reason 2016 sucked is because we lost both Bowie and Prince. And proved that the American people are idiots. Not the majority. But, only one thing is gonna make me more sad than having lost both Bowie and Prince, and that's having to say the words President Trump. But, honestly if Obama couldn't do shit, I just don't see Trump doing anything. So I think we'll be fine.
But, I finally had a job for most of it. I had two girlfriends. And one something or another. Not sure if she was real yet. I haven't gotten catastrophically ill. Next year I'm gonna start freelance PC repair for realsies.
I had a good year. Isn't that all that matters in the end?
