One of my absolute favorite games back in the day. I would only ever play as Lady Deirdre and go for the Transcension victory, felt like that was the 'right' way to play. Never got the expansion and it soon became pretty rare. Should also be worth mentioning the game plus the expansion is available for dirt cheap on GOG.

I always felt that Alpha Centauri's main strength was its massive, well written lore, the encyclopedia entries on everything and clearly defined personalities of the faction leaders. The actual gameplay never clicked with me though, back then I spent way more time on Civ 2: Test of Time (its scifi variant setting was something rather more unique even). Nonetheless, I still have sort of a soft spot for this game for the creative setting alone.

I always felt that Alpha Centauri's main strength was its massive, well written lore, the encyclopedia entries on everything and clearly defined personalities of the faction leaders. Definitely, it was very well thought out and realized. The manual was a real treat too, a thick book full of background stuff and story. It even had some recommended reading too, which led me to read Kim Robinson's excellent Mars trilogy.

The base game has always been fairly common, but I can remember when the expansion used to be one of the rarest in-demand PC games. It got re-released at one point in something called "The Laptop Collection", and I have to assume it was some kind of mistake because even that went out of print fairly quickly (and copies became priced accordingly). Sold-Out Software in the UK sold a version that included it, though it was not very well advertised on the box. I wonder what exactly happened?
Nowadays it is of course trivial to obtain it from GOG.

Wasn't that a pretty common case with physical expansions back in the day? The print runs for the expansions were smaller than the base games and the collections and other re-releases often included just the base game. I had EA Classics versions of a lot their games, including Alpha Centauri and Magic Carpet, but they were always missing the expansions.

I suppose, but there were often releases like Dungeon Keeper Gold and Magic Carpet Plus which included the expansions.
