I frankly doubt the developers gave even the flimsiest fraction of a flying fuck about the relevance of politics in western shooters. As I see it, Vanquish falls into the same category as your average Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, or what have you, and so the entire political angle becomes very much moot.

So, the game is satire? Because they certainly played it with a straight face. Steven Jay Blum sounds so damn gruff I worried that he was coughing madly after every take.
Otherwise, very nice write-up. I like that the article will at least acknowledge some of the shortcomings of the game. By comparison, the God Hand article (different author, I know) was almost universal praise, and then spent the end of its write-up attacking other reviews of the game.

Yea, I love this site but there are a handful of reviews that are just a little odd like that.

Vanquish struck me as a game that didn't know whether it was satire or not. It seemed like it was, at one point, trying to make fun of lunk-headed American shooters, but gave up on it and just relished in its dumbness. There were similar conversations around the time regarding No More Heroes. Felt like a missed opportunity to me too.
And there absolutely some politics in the game's story, it's just that they're window dressing and nothing more. It's not really a big deal though - Bioshock Infinite picks up that flag and completely fumbles it.

Which 2D games are closest to Vanquish' spirit in terms of speed/drive/aesthetics etc.?

Which 2D games are closest to Vanquish' spirit in terms of speed/drive/aesthetics etc.? Silly as it may sound, but I'd say Vanquish is pretty much a ground-based (and slightly less chaotic) 3D Bangai-O.

Puts alot of focus on crap the game never focused in the first place: politics. Yes, i get it, in the game there a russian threat, and that its like some revelation that theres a fear of the russians, just like now in 2017.
In reality the fear of Russia and communism has been a really old trope that dates back to the cold war. It not rocket science or anything, just some dumb plot that play with a really old trope.
I came for a review of a game, not a thesis for a politics class.

There's nothing in the article even remotely comparing the plot to current day politics.

But it really wants to push the political angle of the game, when its just a cliche parody just to setup the goal of the game.

So, apparently the recently released PC version of Bayonetta has been updated with a teaser picture of Sam Gideon somewhere in the files. I wouldn't be surprised if a PC port of Vanquish was indeed next on the table - and I'd definitely jump at the chance of playing the game with mouse and keyboard.

And 60 FPS (I hope). I'm iffy on Bayonetta especially since I own it twice now with the Wii U version, but I would absolutely buy Vanquish again. Less reasons to drag out the 360 too.

I bought Bayonetta to support Platinum's porting efforts, but so far I haven't really felt the urge to play again. Vanquish on the other hand is indeed a game I wish to wank again *ba-dum tsss*.
