Paprium - Official Site (includes purchase link)I remember hearing about this game, back when it was still in the pre-planning stages. I'm glad I paid no attention to it for the past four years, so that I could forget about it and be pleasantly surprised by this reminder of its existence. It looks pretty neat, but cartridge copies look super expensive, lol. The non-limited edition is over $70 EDIT: There's a Reddit comment saying that you can get 10% off using the code " 10141145 " before April 23rd. I haven't tested it myself, so I can't verify its authenticity.

That trailer would be better at convincing me to spend money if it had less epileptic flashing and more than 0.5 seconds of consecutive gameplay footage.
Seriously, that trailer tells me absolutely NOTHING about the overall quality of the game.

I pre-ordered mine last night. I've been following it for a few years now (not that there's been a hell of a lot to follow) but I didn't want to put money down because, y'know, Watermelon. But there's a date for it now, so yup. The soundtrack is sounding amazing too. They've used a new sound engine that sounds completely and utterly bonkers. soundcloud.com/groovemaster303/paprium-music-sampler-v2"Watermelon are using something called 'Sound Shock: 48Khz x 24 channels (FM, PSG, DT128M16VA1LT)'. We were given the tools to compose in a special music dev tracker which me and Jredd helped with ironing out kinks and adding new features. In a nutshell we had 6 channels of FM, 4 PSG and 12 channels for sampled sounds to use in creation of the soundtrack. The other twelve are used for in game SFX. Thanks to guys like Tiido and Fonz, we had the best audio tools for the Megadrive ever created..." 24 PCM channels. What wizardry is this?

Serious question: how racist/sexist is this one? Pier Solar's attempt to mimic the humor of a Working Designs localization fell rather short of the mark in several spots.

Can't you just purchase the ROM? Serious question. Don't really feel like paying 90$ for a Genesis game, especially when my Genesis isn't even with me at the moment. Not really feeling the "a ROM can't do it any justice"-angle, especially since they're bound to be out eventually anyway.

Doesn't seem likely, considering they've said something about special hardware, and they never released a rom for Pier Solar (and dragged their heels on the "HD" version).

I guess we won't know until the game is out and playable? I have yet to play Pier Solar, but I do remember the HG101 article complaining about the game's poor attempts at humor.

Lucky this is a brawler then! I think it's gonna be hard to cock-up a cheesy, on-the-nose brawler when it comes to humour

Well, I decided to go ahead and preorder Paprium. I'm preordering just the standard edition. Thankfully I've got 96 gems on their site, which subtracts $9.59 from the cost, and that combined with the 10% off coupon code, means I only have to pay $52.50 for the game. Sweet!

X-pert74 Nice! Congrats. I had neither available to me at the time I pre-ordered, so I paid just over $120 AUD for it... yikes! Still, I'm not even sorry - game looks wicked, and hearing that music actually being created by my console will be worth the price of admission alone. Also, going by what I've read over at the SEGA-16 forums, there's anecdotal evidence to suggest that Watermelon have sold almost 2000 copies of the game via pre-order already. That's just a little crazy...

Hah, I forgot Sega-16 existed. I used to go to their forums for a period of time, several years back when I started building up my Genesis collection. I was able to get the Reprint edition of Pier Solar through keeping up with updates on their forum Anyways, it'll be awhile yet before this game comes out... so I should probably find time to play Streets of Rage 2 and 3 already. I've only ever played like the first stage in SOR2, and never played SOR3.

Shouldn't be too hard to track down on the interwebs, despite the C&D it received. It's totally worth it, and it shares some devs and musicians in common with Paprium, so there's that

I didn't really like Pier Solar when I tried a demo of it on Steam (The combat just didn't grab me), but from the very small glimpses in that trailer, this seems interesting.
*Checks price*
Oh dear, $89 USD (Meaning it'd be way more for me in AUS)....yeah, not prepared to pay that for a beat 'em up, even if it's a full on Megadrive release. If this gets a digital release at a reasonable price, I'd be interested then.

I actually bought Pier Solar when it came out, and I have to say that it sucked. It's literally the only 16-bit RPG I ever stopped playing halfway through. The storyline and characters never managed to evoke the charm of classic RPGs (or be compelling on their own), but what did me in were the overlong, obtuse dungeons. God, where they an aggravating drag. I remember following the project for a while and these guys were cocky as hell, bragging about how Pier Solar blew every 16 bit RPG out of the water, it's way better than Phantasy Star IV, etc... and then to release this amateurish, ovepriced game? I mean, have you seen the character art? It'd work for a free RPGMaker game, maybe something sold on Steam for 5$, but this was what, 60-70$? Total ripoff. I was such a sucker, I even bought those SuperFighter Team localizations of half-assed Taiwanese RPGs - Beggar Prince, Legend of Wukong... well, Beggar Prince wasn't so bad, but Wukong is spectacularly awful.
All this to say that I have zero confidence in their ability to make a good beat'-em-up. I expect: -Terrible pacing. Long levels, and too many of them. -Bad AI. Enemies either stand around doing nothing or run off-screen (this was a problem with SoR Remake, highly-praised as it was).
Actually that's all a beat'-em-up needs to suck, but it doesn't mean it won't have other problems.
EDIT-Actually, since my post wasn't negative enough: Paprium is a terrible title for a game where you beat up people nonstop.
