Honestly, I always had very mixed feelings about this game. On one side, there are some genuinely smart decisions and design choices, but on the other, it seems like developers tried to be as obtuse as possible with some gameplay/story elements that could be easily explained in simple terms or devices with basically the same effect. It's kinda hard to understand whether people behind this game had clear vision and confidence while developing all this stuff, or just tried to be pretentious for the sake of being pretentious and throw everything at the wall to see what will stick.

"Confusion" can be a clear goal in itself. And when it is, it's the opposite of ""pretentious"", because it's a bit of a prank. I don't know enough about hellsinker to comment on its themes but probably someone out there does.

Glad to see this get published! It took a long-ass time for me to write it, and I'm super super super proud of it <3
Just wanted to note that there are a few leftovers of the original draft remaining after the references to Raiden, Truxton and R-Type in the text.

I don't know enough about hellsinker to comment on its themes but probably someone out there does. Heh, I can see that, looking from this perspective. Though again, usually games with "confusion" in mind double down on that by offering unorthodox gameplay mechanics or just throwing in weird-yet-inventive crap you don't see anywhere else - games like LSD, Yume Nikki, OFF, etc. This one feels a bit uninspired in comparison - like, "Let's call bombs "bootleg ghosts", levels will be "segments of the Cardinal Shaft", and bareboned plot will be unreadable to appear more complex than it is". When it comes to brilliant examples of "Overcomplicating simple things", I think of Vangers, old cult classic from ex-USSR - there's also a very complex and cryptic glossary of pretty trivial things in this game, but since it actually has intricate lore behind it, as well as elaborate, "otherworldy" visual design, everything connects pretty well and is very believable in its weirdness. Hellsinker doesn't seem to have that level of connection behind all the weird naming and plot devices (though it tries to), and "generic animu chars" are still "generic animu chars", which makes its mystery factor somewhat inconsistent and at times forced . Not like I don't enjoy the game, though. Gameplay is pretty great c:
