Like this vid of opening EVERY SINGLE MAP in Simcity (it takes over 3 hours!). I got sick of waiting for maps to load after looking at freaken 10 or 11 of them. Doesn't SimCity actually have 2000 maps? (like, you select a map, start a game, then at least 30 seconds later or something, quit the game, and then start a new game and there will be an alternate map with the same number)

Come on, won't anyone mention the best city? It totally slipped my mind, but here's a nice rip-off of a city map:

Ain't nobody got time fo that!

Clash at Demonhead. Not much too look at but it simply works. More elaborate maps give everything away. Getsu Fuuma Den Sky Blazer

I have a certain fondness for the ones with World travelling feel, like the island ones for instance: Here's one from Marko's Magic Football(a game i'm not really familiar with) with a map looking quite nice in animation:

Beyond Oasis Zelda 3 Landstalker - I remember this one being brighter/more saturated though.

Come on, won't anyone mention the best city? I've always been partial to the South Town map, it's a in a few different games. I've always liked the idea of a fighting tournament taking place across a city instead of worldwide like most games. South Town, with it's fighting arenas placed in city landmarks feels more like a real place than most FG settings. I also like the idea of the cast being made up of "weird locals who happen to be good at fighting" rather than the professional martial artists you see in most games.

Let's see what I can add (sorry if I'm repeating things already mentioned). I was always quite fond of the progress map in Golden Axe, where it shows the Turtle and the Eagle (some of the levels are on their backs): Golden Axe II (Genesis) had an actual mini-view of the world, but you never see it in full in the game (it is viewed through a scope that only shows you the next level each time): Other DOS games that show such a world map include Dangerous Dave II which shows the haunted mansion (and Dave's cap indicates current location): And Prehistorik 2, which has a scrolling map between levels: DOOM for the PC (and maybe some ports) had a map of the episode on intermission screen that showed your progress episode and the completed levels: (it's a pity they discontinued it for E4 of Ultimate Doom and Doom II, although some fan-made versions exist). Heretic did the same thing, also only for the first 3 episodes: For interactivity during mission/skill select - Quake takes the crown for me, as there is an actual mini-level for choosing the episode and difficulty, and there is even a secret to select the Nightmare difficulty. The CD version of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans for DOS added short cinematics before each level that slowly reveal the map of the area. You can see them, for example, in the video below at 0:01:50 and 1:50:10: On to slightly newer games - Rayman 2 - I like both the Hall of Doors level selector from the original version, and the Isle of Doors in the Dreamcast port. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the PS2 version, where they replaced this simple level selector with levels to explore, much less than I expected. Now that I think about it, most Rayman games had very nice level selectors, where you either walk around a beautifully-drawn map ( Rayman, Rayman Origins, Rayman Fiesta Run) or have hub levels with background, scenery, etc. that contain doors to the actual levels ( Rayman 2, Rayman Legends, GBA ports of Rayman 3 and Rayman Raving Rabbids,). OK, that is all for now.

I want to say I really like this thread, great idea bumpy! As for my own contribution - I'm going to choose Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The overworld map is fully explorable in overhead Zeldalike style, complete with environmental based puzzles that are used to discover alternate versions of each stage. Playing in the map feels like it's own experience and, in contrast to the platforming stages, has aa really laid back nature to it.
