Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya's follow-up to Cave Story isn't quite isn't as complex, but it manages to perfect its simple design in incredibly impressive ways Double "isn't" on the site's main page! I played it (only the normal run though) and found it good, I bet that most gamers that know of Pixel haven't played it because "it isn't Cave Story"... but it doesn't need to be, it's a perfectly fine old-style action game that's meant to be played also on smartphones, so there's that. Also he spent five years making that game, doubt he now has the will and time to devote himself that much on a single game. I read somewhere that "Cat & Frog", the firm from the game, is based on old stories (comics?) made by Pixel featuring himself as the frog and his fiancee as the cat. I wonder what she thinks about being represented as a bossy cat lady that speaks an undecipherable language and is ultimately responsible for all the bad things that happen in this game I also like the usual wackiness of the enemies, especially some mid-bosses such as the armored Giga Puddi!

To elaborate on Lord Dalek's question, Kero Blaster has two free demos/sequels/prequels/whatever you want to call them by the name of Pink Hour and Pink Heaven.

Yeah, it's kinda weird they aren't included in the article. They're short and cheap, so you might as well complete the 'series'. Also, not really sure what is meant with: but the writer doesn't post here anymore so I guess I won't find out anyway.
At any rate, I've been meaning to play this one for a while, but the price tag kind of puts me off. Hopefully it'll go on sale this summer.

After that, it disappeared from the radar for quite some time and when it resurfaced, it had changed in many parts and taken its current form.

I've now played through everything the game has to offer and have some corrections/nitpicks if you'll indulge me.
First of all, Pink Heaven was released after Kero Blaster, not before, like Pink Hour.
Secondly, the secret weapon in the game isn't called the Kero Blaster, it's the Kuro Blaster. Also, you don't get it after beating the game once, you have to beat both the normal mode and Zangyou mode. Hard mode (Omake mode) isn't actually Zangyou mode, it's a seperate mode unlocked after Zangyou mode. Only in Omake mode can you find the Kuro Blaster. It's basically a New Game+ with harder enemies, and a different end to the final stage (and the Kuro Blaster and its two upgrades hidden in 3 of the game's stages). Not sure why the article doesn't make a distinction between them.
Also, the article acknowledges that Zangyou mode 'almost feels like a completely different game', but I still think the article kind of misrepresents it. The stage layouts are completely changed, only retaining the general themes of the stage (for example, in both modes one stage starts out in a swamp, then goes to a hillside, etc.) It also has new enemies and other stage elements, changed bosses, and a completely different final stage, complete with like 4 new bosses, new stage themes and music. So, it's not technically wrong, but the article doesn't quite convey how essential it is to play through it. You simply miss more than half of the game if you don't.
Oh, and the screenshots are also not properly sized (things don't actually move from pixel to pixel as it looks here, one pixel here is actually a 2x2 'pixel'), but it only really looks bad in the first screenshot of the shop (the text, among other things in the game use normally sized pixels).

The thing about the screens is that they kind of are properly sized in proportion to the pixels, but the actual game runs at double (or higher) the resolution. However, the text is displayed at a higher resolution than everything else, so in the scenes where that's present, they'll look off in the screenshots. I think I included the full size pic in those cases.
It's a little hard to explain, but it's similar in the way that the SNES had high resolution for kanji display in certain games. For the site's sake, the alternative would be to use a bilinear filter to resize it and that would make the entire screenshot look worse.
The weird resolution seemed to be a carryover from its days as a mobile game, I can't imagine any other reason it would've been designed with something so odd.

Well the shop screenshot still is the small version but it's not a big deal anyway, since the screenshots look fine.
It's only if you look closely you can see that it doesn't look like this in-game. For example, the fish on the right in the preview screenshot above isn't correct. Ideally, things in-game would move in increments of one in-game pixel.
