Here's a topic I thought would be interesting, what are the unlikeliest sequels ever made? Sequels to games that weren't big successes or came many years after it's predecessor?
Wasteland 2 would be high up there, coming out decades after the original and only happening due to the then new Kickstarter crowd funding model, but while that's impressive I think my pick for the most unlikely sequel of all time would actually be Alice: Madness Returns.
And the reason why is the context, Alice: Madness Returns was not a Kickstarted, crowdfunded game but was instead funded and released by Electronic Arts, while the original American McGee's Alice was not a big flop, it was only ever a cult classic at best and it's just amazingly unlikely to me that a decade later EA would fund a sequel and treat it like it could be a AAA smash hit.
Unfortunately it wasn't and it doesn't look like American McGee will be able to get another game off the ground, which only makes Madness Returns more special.

Is Jade Cocoon 2 worth a darn?
Talk about a series that no one talks about. :/

Duke Nukem Forever was a pretty unlikely sequel.

Is Jade Cocoon 2 worth a darn? Talk about a series that no one talks about. :/ I like the first one, it has a unique design aesthetic and is short and simple knowing not to overstay its welcome. The second one I'm not too fond of, its longer and more complicated, and the characters can get obnoxious.

I'm pretty sure no-one was expecting Nier: Automata, Drakengard 3 or Might & Magic X.

Syberia 3 maybe Drat, I meant to mention Syberia 3 myself, I was very surprised when I saw it on Steam. I'm pretty sure no-one was expecting Nier: Automata, Drakengard 3 Both are good picks.

While it's not exactly a sequel, there's a new game coming out that takes place in the same universe as El-Shaddai.

The Bubsy thing reminds me... I don't think anyone was clamoring for a sequel in the form of Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. Oh well, it's a solid game and new Huelsbeck/Machinae Supremacy music is never a bad thing.

I imagine the Disney/Burton movie was announced by the time it was greenlit? I think it's slightly more complicated in that Alice the game was originally getting adapted into a movie itself with Sarah Michelle Gellar as Alice, but it didn't publicly progress much farther than that. Then the Burton Alice got announced years before it came out (2007 vs 2010), so I think that killed the other Alice movie and whatever work was done on it was absorbed into a new game instead.

Oh well, it's a solid game and new Huelsbeck/Machinae Supremacy music is never a bad thing. That one was kickstarted though, so there were definitely people who wanted it. There's also the less known Giana Sisters DS.
