It's not particularly replayable and the later stages tend to drag a bit, but in terms of feeling and look, it feels as ambitious as the genre can get, and I mean that in a good way: The environments and the art direction give the impression of a huge world; the 1 on 1 fighting system is actually pretty fun; the two characters have distinct playstyles... it's obviously more fun if you enjoy the source material, but it's a good game even without the license bonus and one of the GBA games most suited for the system.

Of course the fighting is good, Takashi Nishiyama is god. It is certainly more fun than the other games mentioned in the article, though it could do with a little more focused level design à la Treasure.

Probably the most similar title to this game would be Dimps' side-scroller based on One Piece. Makes sense seeing how both are surprisingly decent portable takes on each Shounen series and both appeared Stateside. I don't know if there are any other changes and can't find a quick side-by-side comparison online, but one of the other edits between US and Japan was Oolong's wish to halt Pilaf's. It falls in line with the dub version where the Japanese original has the pig wishing for panties and English wishing for "comfortable underpants". The sprites were edited for the Western release to become more boyish briefs, complete with a smiley face on them.

Extra Mode and the unlockable characters gave it some replay value, I felt

I completed the game 100% back then. Loved it to bits.

I remember trying that one, expecting nothing from it, and actually playing through most of it over the next two days. I did feel that it dragged on a bit too much. It would have been a different story with more interesting levels, as they're all rather plain. The gameplay itself is fun, though, and pre-Z Dragon Ball is actually great manga, so the focus on that part of it is nice.
