Neat article. It's always interesting to see an odd duck from renowned company. About that Tobal M. I poked around the Japanese internet wondering if I can learn more. From few sources I could collect, it's drastically cut conversion. Only 5 characters ever made it to the cast, namely Chuji, Epon, Gren, Doctor V, and Chaco. Outside basic Tournament Mode and revised control scheme for mobile, it also had AI Survival Mode that supposedly involves training with CPU opponent. I dug up some clean screenshots. Feel free to use them on the article. imgur.com/Ot7pf83imgur.com/a9Eh1oximgur.com/c8YcDfMimgur.com/3bFHYnuimgur.com/xmJtApj

I expected they'd have cut the Quest Mode and the numerous extraneous modes and options, but that's a pretty odd little port. Of course, I'm not sure why they'd even want to port a fighter to a mobile phone.

While the Ehrgeiz article is about ten years old at this point, it seems like it might be worth merging it with the Tobal article. Ehrgeiz always felt like a spiritual successor to me.
EDIT: I'd also mention Tobal No.1's unofficial US title, "That game that came with the Final Fantasy VII demo" (as attested by the US cover image shown in the article).

EDIT: I'd also mention Tobal No.1's unofficial US title, "That game that came with the Final Fantasy VII demo" (as attested by the US cover image shown in the article). I did mention the bit about the FF7 demo in the conclusion (which is on the second page). But this was a marketing decision on the part of the publisher and has nothing to do with the game itself. It's also quite dismissive towards Tobal No. 1, when the whole point of the article is to shed light on an interesting (and good!) fighting game series, not yap about FF7 some more. I'd also disagree about Ehrgeiz. It reprises certain gameplay elements from Tobal, but no more than any non-SF Capcom fighter does from SF2. Would you argue Darkstalkers should be included in an article about the Street Fighter series? Or a Fighting Vipers write up should be added to the Virtua Fighter article? Actually, the fact it's an early arena fighter distinguishes it from Tobal even more than either of those example. And then, we'd also have to merge it with Kakuto Chojin, which has things in common with both, and maybe even Fighting Beauty Wulong. Separate franchises deserve separate articles.

Yeah I agree that Ehrgeiz should remain a separate article. Very few major elements are shared between them and even the quest modes are not even similar.

Probably the most interesting about the console version of Ehrgeiz is that the Quest Mode is an almost entirely separate game, with uses it own battle system instead of the fighting game's engine, and it's not a mini-game either. It's a pretty weird choice; seems like Ehrgeiz could have been improved by focusing on expanding the arenas and adding more items instead. Hell, it would've been Power Stone before Power Stone. On the other hand, I enjoyed playing through the Quest Mode, so I don't knock it.

I just noticed something, there's nothing in the article about one of the unlockable monsters in Tobal 2 being a Chocobo, complete with its own unique theme (which is damn near impossible to find as an MP3 for some reason). Surely that warrants a mention?
